Pune and its surroundings are set to endure soaring temperatures for the next 48 hours, with the mercury crossing 40 degrees Celsius. According to IMD, the hot spell, exacerbated by humid conditions, will persist, accompanied by a rise in temperature over the next few days. Anupam Kashyapi of IMD attributes the sweltering heat to hot air influx from Gujarat via the Konkan region. With rainfall unlikely due to wind discontinuity, residents are advised to stay indoors during peak hours and stay hydrated. Shivajinagar recorded the highest temperature this month at 41.3 degrees Celsius.            

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended the red alert for a heatwave in seven districts of southern Bengal, warning of heat-related illnesses. East Midnapore, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, and Birbhum will experience severe heatwave conditions until Wednesday. An orange alert has been issued for Kolkata and other districts, with temperatures expected to rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, Kolkata saw temperatures soar to 40 degrees Celsius, with no relief in sight. Northern districts like Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar have been issued a yellow warning.            

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a 'red alert' for heatwaves in Odisha and West Bengal, alongside 'orange' and 'yellow' alerts for Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Kerala. With temperatures soaring, Panagarh in West Bengal hits 44.6°C, while Odisha's Angul records 44.7°C. Relief is expected in Delhi-NCR after rain lowers temperatures briefly. IMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and north Telangana. Northeastern states may also see light rainfall. The situation underscores the need for precautions amid the escalating heatwave conditions.

Relief operations intensify with two government vehicles allocated per affected forest division. Authorities impose construction and car washing bans, emphasizing public awareness to prevent further fire outbreaks.

On Thursday, Maharashtra's Jalgaon recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at 42.7 degrees Celsius.

Thai authorities in Bangkok have issued an extreme heat warning as temperatures, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern, soared above 52°C. April's typical heat and humidity have intensified, prompting warnings for residents to stay indoors for safety. The heat index, factoring in humidity and wind speed, reached "extremely dangerous" levels. Despite the warning, many, including motorcycle taxi drivers and street vendors, continue to work outdoors, risking health complications. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) released a report indicating a significant 30% rise in the sea level of the Bay of Bengal over the past 30 years, surpassing the global average. Titled "The State Of The Climate in Asia 2023," the report also highlights Bengal's soaring temperatures, which are among the highest in India. Asia was labeled the most disaster-prone region in 2023, with floods causing extensive casualties and economic losses, while heat waves intensified. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD director general and WMO vice-president, emphasized the gravity of the WMO findings regarding climate vulnerability in Bengal and India.
