Taiwan experienced a night of continuous shaking as dozens of aftershocks rocked the island, following a major quake over two weeks ago. A significant and prolonged heatwave scorched Southeast Asia, reaching as far as Bangladesh, Eastern India, and southern China, with record-breaking temperatures. The WMO's report, "The State of the Climate in Asia 2023," underscores the worsening impact of weather-related hazards in the region.

Taiwan's eastern county of Hualien experienced a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, according to the island's weather administration. The quake, with a depth of 5.5 km (3.4 miles), shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. Fortunately, no immediate reports of damage have been received. This quake follows a series of aftershocks from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien earlier this month. Taiwan remains on alert as seismic activity continues to affect the region, highlighting the ongoing risk of earthquakes in the area.

Five earthquakes rattled Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, in eastern Taiwan within a span of just nine minutes. The seismic activity occurred between 5:08 pm and 5:17 pm (local time), as reported by Central News Agency Focus Taiwan. The US Geological Survey recorded the most significant quake at magnitude 6.5. This event comes two weeks after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale struck Taiwan's eastern shores, leaving four dead and over 700 injured. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties from the recent series of earthquakes.

Nearly 60,000 people evacuated in Guangdong as heavy rains trigger widespread flooding, with 11 individuals reported missing but no casualties. Footage reveals submerged lands and rescuers navigating waist-deep waters. Several major rivers overflow, prompting monitoring of "dangerously high" water levels. The Pearl River delta, prone to floods, sees disruptions in manufacturing and daily life. Power outages affect 1.16 million households, with significant economic losses estimated. Continuous rain disrupts flights and closes schools. Videos depict collapsing infrastructure and citizens' struggles. Meteorological warnings indicate prolonged heavy rains, intensifying the region's climate challenges.

India is facing a second heatwave this month, with temperatures soaring far above normal levels. The India Meteorological Department warns of scorching highs, 4 to 6 degrees Celsius hotter than usual, in many states. Places like Odisha, Rayalaseema, and Gangetic West Bengal sizzle at 42-45 degrees Celsius. Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu also endure sweltering conditions, hitting 40-42 degrees Celsius. The IMD flags the severity, noting temperatures well above average in several regions. With concerns rising over health and agriculture, the ongoing heatwave poses significant challenges for affected areas.

Parts of Odisha experienced a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching 45.2°C. West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh also faced intense heat, with temperatures exceeding 44°C. In Bihar, the district administration adjusted school timings due to soaring temperatures, while Uttar Pradesh witnessed temperatures above 40°C. IMD predicts an increase in heatwave days in April, with certain regions facing over 20 days of scorching conditions, posing concerns during the ongoing general elections.

With extreme heat events becoming more frequent, urgent action is required to safeguard vulnerable populations from the lethal impacts of heat stress.

IMD issues orange alerts for Odisha and yellow alerts for Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, warning of heatwave conditions in several states.
