Kerala recorded 292 fresh COVID-19 infections and 3 fatalities in the last 24 hours, state health department data showed on Wednesday. This accounts for over 85% of India's new coronavirus cases. Kerala's active caseload now stands at 2,041, with 224 recoveries also reported. The latest deaths brought the state's cumulative COVID toll to 72,056. Officials say despite the recent rise in cases, Kerala remains prepared through isolation beds, oxygen supply and other provisions. Health Minister Veena George has issued directions to hospitals for arranging special facilities, treatment wings and ventilators for COVID patients. She asserted the state administration is vigilant and equipped to handle any potential virus wave.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a "variant of interest," emphasizing a low global health risk. Originating from the BA.2.86 lineage, JN.1 has been monitored since its initial detection in the US in September. Despite comprising 15% to 29% of US cases, the CDC asserts that current vaccines effectively guard against severe outcomes. China recently identified seven cases of this subvariant. WHO's assessment aligns with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, assuring the public that JN.1 poses no heightened threat compared to other circulating variants.

Karnataka's Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday advised senior citizens and those with comorbidities to wear masks, in light of rising COVID-19 cases in neighboring Kerala and other states. Speaking in Kodagu, Rao said there is no need to panic but the state will soon issue an advisory asking vulnerable groups to mask up. He directed government hospitals near border regions adjoining Kerala to remain alert, increase testing capacity and mandatorily test those with respiratory symptoms. This comes as India's active COVID caseload rose to 1,828 on Monday, with one death in Kerala where a new sub-variant was found.

India reported 335 new COVID-19 cases and 5 fatalities on Sunday, taking the total caseload to 4.5 crore and death toll to 5.33 lakh. Active cases rose to 1,701. A COVID sub-variant, JN.1, was detected in Kerala through genome sequencing of an elderly woman's sample from December 8th. She had mild symptoms and recovered. The variant was earlier found in Indian passengers at the Singapore airport months ago. Kerala Health Minister said JN.1 is not a cause for concern, though situation is being monitored. She asked people, especially those with comorbidities, to remain cautious but said the sub-variant has been identified and there is no need to worry.
