Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit France on June 16-17 to attend the G7 Summit in Evian, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Tuesday. During the summit, Modi is expected to hold talks with world leaders and discuss global issues, including economic growth, artificial intelligence and international cooperation.   There is also speculation about a possible meeting between Modi and US President Donald Trump, who is expected to attend the summit. The MEA has not confirmed any bilateral meeting yet. If it happens, it would be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since February last year.

Indian-origin Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman has advanced to the November runoff election for mayor of Los Angeles. Raman overtook Republican candidate Spencer Pratt as more mail-in ballots were counted after the primary election.   She secured 28.5 per cent of the vote, while Pratt received 25.8 per cent. Raman will now face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a head-to-head contest on November 3.   Raman is known for supporting affordable housing, social services and government accountability. The race is expected to be closely watched as voters choose the leader of the second-largest city in the United States.

India on Tuesday accused Pakistan of spreading fake news to divert attention from alleged human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The Ministry of External Affairs said reports from the region pointed to severe police action against protesters.   The remarks came after violent clashes broke out in Rawalakot following a government crackdown on the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The group had been protesting against government policies and political representation issues. Several people were killed and many injured during the unrest.   India urged the international community to take note of the situation and hold Pakistan accountable for alleged abuses against civilians.

An Indian-born businessman is among 17 naturalised Americans facing the loss of their US citizenship under a major crackdown by the Trump administration. Neeraj Sharma, former CEO of a New Jersey staffing company, is accused of filing fraudulent H-1B visa petitions and providing false information during his citizenship application process.   According to the US Justice Department, Sharma hid details of his alleged offences when applying for citizenship in 2017. He was later convicted of visa fraud. Authorities are now seeking to revoke his citizenship. The administration says it is increasing efforts to target people who obtained US citizenship through fraud or misrepresentation.

India is once again evaluating the proposed 2,000-km Oman-Gujarat Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline, a project aimed at reducing the country's dependence on energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Estimated to cost around Rs 40,000 crore, the pipeline would transport natural gas directly from Oman to Gujarat through one of the world's deepest subsea routes.   The proposal, first discussed more than three decades ago, has regained attention amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns over energy security. State-run firms, including GAIL, Indian Oil Corporation and Engineers India Ltd, are preparing a detailed feasibility report. However, major engineering, financial and commercial challenges remain before the project can become a reality. (PC: India Today)

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the reported killing of Kashmiris in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and called on the international community to hold Pakistan accountable. The Ministry of External Affairs described the incident as a "massacre" and accused Islamabad of continuing its oppressive policies in the region.   India said the violence reflected Pakistan's failure to protect civilians and respect human rights in the territory under its control. Reiterating its long-standing position that PoK is under Pakistan's illegal occupation, New Delhi expressed hope that the global community would take note of the incident and ensure accountability for those responsible. An Indian-origin entrepreneur and researcher has cautioned Indian students against taking huge loans to study at what he called "scammy" private universities in Germany. Mayukh Panja, founder of AI firm Populations, said some institutions function like "visa mills" and attract foreign students with promises of easy careers in Europe.   Sharing his observations from Berlin, Panja claimed that many Indian students end up working long hours in delivery services, restaurants and other gig jobs while struggling to repay debts. He urged families not to sell land or borrow heavily for such admissions and advised students to carefully research universities before applying. His remarks sparked a wider discussion online about the risks of expensive overseas education and unrealistic expectations. (PC: HT)

India strongly criticised Pakistan at the United Nations over military airstrikes in Afghanistan, calling them a “blatant assault” on Afghan sovereignty and regional stability. Addressing the UN General Assembly, Harish Parvathaneni cited reports from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan indicating that 372 civilians were killed and 397 injured during the first three months of 2026, many during Ramadan. India backed calls by the UN Secretary-General and UNAMA for accountability, investigations and civilian protection under international law. China on Monday described India as a partner rather than a rival, urging both countries to view each other’s development as an opportunity instead of a threat. Speaking for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian said relations among China, India and Russia are important for regional and global stability. Beijing stated that conditions along the India-China border remain generally stable and communication channels are functioning smoothly. China called for greater mutual trust, expanded cooperation and careful management of differences. Separately, Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong backed dialogue between India and Pakistan to address disputes and maintain peace. (PC: The Tribune)

India strongly criticised Harish Parvathaneni's counterpart state, Pakistan, at the United Nations Security Council over Islamabad’s use of the term “Fitna al-Hindustan” for certain groups. Speaking at the UNSC, Parvathaneni described the designation as state-sponsored misinformation wrapped in religious terminology and accused Pakistan’s deep state of fostering hostility toward India to distract from domestic political and economic challenges. India also criticised Pakistan’s military actions in Afghanistan, saying civilian casualties cannot be justified as counterterrorism operations. The remarks also referenced the growing influence of Pakistan’s military leadership under Asim Munir.
