Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed on Assam’s first Emergency Landing Facility in Moran on Saturday. It is the first such highway airstrip in the Northeast. The 4.2-km stretch can be used by Indian Air Force fighter jets during emergencies. The project cost Rs 100 crore.   Modi arrived from Chabua airfield in a C-130J aircraft. He also watched a 40-minute air show by the Air Force. Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale jets operated from the strip. The An-32 aircraft and ALH helicopters took part in the display. Garud Commandos showed special operations skills.

A decomposed body of a 33‑year‑old woman, identified as Ashrafi alias Siya from Gondia, Maharashtra, was recovered from a septic tank in an empty plot in Bhopal’s Nishatpura area. Police say Siya and her married lover, Sameer, met on Instagram and she moved to Bhopal to live with him. After frequent disputes, Sameer allegedly strangled her to death and, with help from his family, stuffed her body into an iron box and dumped it in the tank to hide the crime. A six-year-old boy, Garv Kasana, died during an MRI scan at a private diagnostic centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. His family alleges excessive sedation and medical negligence caused his death. The child’s condition worsened after receiving anaesthesia, and he was declared dead at a nearby hospital. Relatives protested outside the centre demanding action. Police have sealed the facility and ordered a medical investigation. A formal FIR will be filed after the probe. Authorities are examining the staff’s role and the sedation procedure followed during the scan. (PC: HT)

The Bombay High Court has issued an interim order stopping filmmaker Vidnyan Mane, a friend of cricketer Smriti Mandhana, from making defamatory statements about singer Palaash Muchhal and his mother online or in the media. Muchhal filed a ₹10 crore defamation case, saying Mane’s claims about financial disputes and his cancelled wedding with Mandhana harmed his reputation. The court noted these remarks could cause serious damage and barred similar comments until further hearings, giving Muchhal temporary legal protection. (PC: India Today)

Indian national Nikhil Gupta has pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court in New York to charges of murder-for-hire, conspiracy, and money laundering. The case is linked to a 2023 plot to kill Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen. Prosecutors said Gupta tried to hire a contract killer and paid an advance, but the person was actually an undercover U.S. agent. Gupta was extradited from the Czech Republic and now awaits sentencing. He could face a long prison sentence under U.S. law. (PC: NDTV)

Veteran Doordarshan newsreader Sarla Maheshwari has died in Delhi at the age of 71, DD News said on X. She was one of the most familiar faces of DD television news in the 1980s, when anchors were widely known as newsreaders. Doordarshan paid tribute, calling her a respected presenter known for her “gentle voice, precise pronunciation, and dignified presentation.” It said she built deep trust among viewers during the early years of broadcast news. A Hindu gym owner in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, has drawn national attention after he defended a Muslim shopkeeper during a dispute with Bajrang Dal activists. A video shows Deepak Kumar questioning the group for asking the shopkeeper to remove the word “Baba” from his store name. In the clip, he asks, “Are Muslims not citizens of India?” He later told BBC Hindi his action was spontaneous. After the video spread, he received praise from opposition leaders and many social media users. He has also faced protests and death threats. Police registered cases after complaints from both sides. The UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has appointed its first woman Travelling Ticket Examiner in 145 years. Sarita Yolmo of Northeast Frontier Railway took charge on the toy train between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling on February 5. Railway officials confirmed she is the first woman to serve in this role on the route. “I am proud to be the first woman TTE in a Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train,” Yolmo said. She added she felt both “thrilled and anxious” as she had no earlier experience on this line. Yolmo joined the railway in 1991 and now works on the NJP–Darjeeling service on rotation.
