Tension arose in Hyderabad’s Old City early Sunday after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession around 2 am in the Madannapet police station area. Renowned Indian painter and former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jogen Chowdhury died at a private hospital in Kolkata on Sunday, October 25, at the age of 87. He had been battling a rare blood cancer, known as myeloproliferative neoplasm, for around 14 months and was undergoing chemotherapy. Ruby General Hospital said he was admitted on October 16 and died at 10.15 am. Born in Faridpur in undivided Bengal, Chowdhury developed a distinctive artistic style influenced by Indian and European traditions. Actor Naseeruddin Shah has expressed support for protesting students at Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), alleging political pressure following the BJP’s electoral victory in West Bengal. The institute has defended its disciplinary action, citing campus violence and safety concerns. According to an SRFTI report, incidents included vandalism, the alleged assault of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera and damage to his office. The institute suspended 6 students for a year and halted classes until November 13. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has refused to disclose the name and version of the software used to detect errors in voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), citing trade secrets and commercial confidentiality under the RTI Act. In its October 16 reply to activist MA Mujeeb Ayyub, the commission said no new software was developed or purchased for the exercise. It also said electoral registration officers make decisions on voter inclusion or exclusion based on facts and records. The Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team performed aerial manoeuvres over Varanasi on October 25, 2026, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to witness the Air Force Day Aerial Display. Police have arrested another accused in the Tiger Shroff shooting case from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Pranjal Thakran, 22, a resident of Sonipat, Haryana, was arrested during a joint operation by the Mumbai and Indore crime branches on Saturday. He allegedly played a key role in the attack and supplied weapons used in the crime. The arrest comes nearly a week after motorcycle-borne assailants fired five to six rounds at a car in Mumbai’s Juhu area on October 18. Shroff escaped unhurt, while his driver and a vlogger were injured. Police will question Thakran about the alleged conspiracy and his links to other suspects. (PC: HT)
