Delhi Police have arrested Sudhanshu, one of the operators of the “Hostel Daze” paying guest facility, after a five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on September 6, killing seven people, including five students. Sudhanshu and his business partner Shubham Tyagi had leased the property in August 2025; Tyagi remains absconding. Police are investigating ongoing basement and ground-floor repair work, the lease agreement and the building’s structural safety. The property owners and a labour contractor have also been arrested. Authorities are examining possible construction violations, while the Delhi government has ordered safety inspections of PG accommodations across the city. (PC: The Hindu)

The Supreme Court on Wednesday strongly criticised the Gautam Budh Nagar administration over a preventive notice issued to 20-year-old law student Akshat Tripathi for allegedly encouraging students to join a protest in Delhi.   Chief Justice of India Surya Kant questioned the action despite the court’s September 1 order protecting students who participated in the demonstrations. “How could a Magistrate dare to issue notice? We made clear no coercive action against any student!” the CJI said.   The notice, issued on September 4, accused Tripathi of spreading anti-government information. It was withdrawn the next day after police found the information behind it was false. (PC: HT)

A Delhi court has denied anticipatory bail to reservation activist and YouTuber Ajeet Bharti in an SC/ST Act case, saying his remarks about Dalit leader and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad prima facie invoked caste hierarchy and notions of upper-caste superiority.   The court observed that Bharti’s statement that Azad should “make himself worthy” of marrying an upper-caste woman was a specific caste-based reference and appeared humiliating. It held that Section 3(1)(r) of the SC/ST Act was prima facie attracted, triggering a bar on anticipatory bail.   The court clarified that its observations were limited to the bail plea and did not determine Bharti’s guilt. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the licences of three food units run by ISKCON Juhu after inspections on September 3 found multiple food-safety violations. The units at Hare Krishna Land, ISKCON Juhu Food Services-Restaurant and Govinda’s Restaurant were found to have issues including pest infestation, poor storage and inadequate segregation of raw and cooked food. Inspectors also flagged drainage problems and gaps in water testing, employee medical checks and food-safety training. At Govinda’s, standing water was found in cold storage, along with blocked drains and pest-control deficiencies. The action was part of a wider FDA crackdown across Maharashtra. CCTV footage showing a black Mahindra Thar near a forest in Odisha’s Balasore district has drawn investigators’ attention after five orangutans were rescued from the area. The vehicle was reportedly seen passing through at around 11:25 pm and returning about 15 minutes later, a day before the critically endangered apes were found. A four-member Special Task Force is investigating how the orangutans, which are not native to India, reached the forest. The animals have been shifted to Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar and placed in quarantine. Authorities are also checking airport, railway and port CCTV footage for possible clues. (PC: NDTV)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to discuss defence cooperation during their September 11 meeting in New Delhi. The S-400 air defence system, Russia’s Su-57 fighter jet and an upgrade of the BrahMos missile are expected to be key issues. Russia has said it remains committed to delivering India’s two remaining S-400 systems under the existing deal. Moscow is also pushing the Su-57, with discussions potentially covering production technology and local manufacturing. Both sides are further exploring upgrades to BrahMos to improve its capabilities and strengthen its export potential.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday questioned a Greater Noida executive magistrate for issuing a notice to Gautam Buddha University student Akshat Tripathi over his participation in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The notice sought a ₹5 lakh personal bond despite the court’s earlier order barring coercive or penal action against students linked to the 36-day protest. CJI Surya Kant asked, “How could a Magistrate dare to issue notice?” The notice was later withdrawn. Major Navya Shekhawat has become the first woman officer from the Indian Army to serve as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.   Shekhawat joined the Army after clearing the Combined Defence Services examination and trained at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. She was commissioned into the Army Service Corps in 2021 and rose to the rank of Major within a few years. As an ADC, she assists the President during official engagements and ceremonies while helping maintain military and ceremonial protocol. She is the second woman overall to hold the President’s ADC position, following Navy officer Lieutenant Commander Yashasvi Solanki in 2025. (PC: X)

A candlelight vigil was held at Kangla Gate in Imphal over the death of Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram, who allegedly died after being assaulted outside his Delhi home. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed grief and wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, seeking a fair, time-bound investigation under senior police supervision. He also called for the arrest and prosecution of all alleged perpetrators and conspirators. Delhi Police has arrested seven adults and detained a minor in connection with the case. Five baby orangutans were found in the Bichitrapur forest area near Badapahi village in Odisha’s Balasore district, nearly 4,000 km from their natural habitats in Indonesia and Malaysia. The discovery has raised serious concerns because orangutans are not native to India. Forest officials rescued the animals and began investigating how they reached the area, with suspected international wildlife trafficking among the possibilities. The unusual discovery also attracted large crowds, prompting authorities to secure the animals. Officials are assessing their health and considering relocation to a suitable facility, including Nandankanan Zoological Park. The case highlights concerns over illegal wildlife trade and endangered-species protection.
