Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Satya Niketan building collapse in Delhi, calling the incident distressing and extending condolences to the families of those who died. In a post on X, Modi prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and said authorities were working at the site to assist those affected. The latest update said 4 people had died and 9 had been rescued following the collapse at Satya Niketan Market. Rescue operations remained underway as authorities continued efforts at the site. News18 also reported that ongoing repair and construction work in the basement of the five-storey boys’ PG hostel was believed to have caused the sudden collapse.

At least four people have died and several others were injured after a five-storey student PG building collapsed in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon. The collapse turned the congested neighbourhood near Delhi University’s South Campus into a frantic rescue zone, with fears that dozens could still be trapped beneath tonnes of rubble. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach those inside the debris. Locals said the building, known as “Hostel Daze”, was nearly 50 years old, while construction work was underway in its basement when it collapsed. The area has congested lanes lined with student hostels, PG accommodations and eateries. Six people have been rescued, while several students remain trapped.

Indonesia suspended operations at five airports, including Jakarta’s main Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau spread across the region. The eruption produced ash plumes reaching up to 15,000 metres, creating serious risks for aircraft engines and aviation safety. Around 301 flights, including 58 international services, were disrupted, while airlines cancelled or delayed several Jakarta-bound flights. The eruption also affected fishing and school activities as ash caused irritation and reduced visibility. Authorities established a 3-kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano and are monitoring conditions. Officials said there was no immediate tsunami threat, while measures including cloud seeding were being considered. (PC: PTI)

For the first time since India began opening its space sector to private companies, nine ISRO employee organisations representing thousands of staff have formally sought written clarification from the Department of Space. Their concerns focus on ISRO’s future role in designing, developing, manufacturing, testing and launching vehicles such as PSLV, LVM-3 and SSLV. The associations questioned reports that private players could eventually take over launch-vehicle production and operations. They also sought clarity on the transfer of publicly developed technology, infrastructure and technical expertise. Employees warned that reduced in-house activities could affect jobs, recruitment, promotions and technical responsibilities within ISRO. (PC: X)

A building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, September 6, amid heavy rainfall, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred in a locality near Delhi University’s South Campus, where many college students live. At least 12 fire tenders were deployed as emergency teams began rescue operations. Reports from the scene indicated that the building may have been used as a paying guest accommodation. Rescue personnel are searching through the rubble for survivors, while the exact number of people trapped and the cause of the collapse remain unclear. The situation is developing. 

At least nine people have died and several others have fallen ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in villages under Banda tehsil of Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district. Around three dozen people were reportedly taken to hospitals, with more than 25 referred to higher medical facilities. Health officials suspect methyl alcohol poisoning, although the exact cause will be confirmed through post-mortem examinations and investigations. Authorities have deployed medical and administrative teams to affected villages for door-to-door screening. Liquor samples have been sent for analysis, while several liquor outlets in the affected area have reportedly been sealed as investigators work to identify the source. 

State Bank of India plans to hire around 12,000 employees in the current financial year, Chairman CS Setty said. The recruitment will include clerical and officer posts. The final number may change based on retirements and the bank’s needs.   SBI also plans to expand its branch network. The bank expects to add around 200 to 250 branches on a net basis during the year.   SBI had over 2.45 lakh employees as of March 2026. It hired more than 25,000 people during the 2025-26 financial year, according to its annual report.

The rescue operation is still underway.   Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident. Teams from the DDMA, NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence have been deployed at the site.   Authorities are working to rescue anyone still trapped under the collapsed building.  

India has backed a United Nations resolution promoting equal-area world maps. The resolution aims to show the true relative sizes of countries and continents.   However, India said its support does not approve any specific map or depiction of national borders. The Ministry of External Affairs said Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh must be shown according to India’s official map.   India warned that any inaccurate or misleading depiction of its territory was unacceptable. The UN resolution is non-binding. It encourages the use of maps that show land areas more accurately but does not ban the widely used Mercator projection.

Rescue teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence were deployed at the site. Six to seven students have been rescued and taken to hospitals, while three admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre are in critical condition. Police received a PCR call about the collapse at around 1:34 pm. Locals said construction work was underway in the basement. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the situation was being monitored.
