Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc marched towards the Supreme Court in Delhi on Monday to protest alleged voter roll manipulation. The alliance launched its “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy” campaign and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition accused the poll body of allowing “vote chori”. Sources said Rahul Gandhi was likely to be allowed to enter the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leaders were detained during a separate protest. Security was tightened across Delhi, with police and paramilitary forces deployed at key locations. Traffic and metro services were also affected.  

Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and named three alternative venues. The new sites are Ramlila Ground in Old Delhi, CBD Ground in East Delhi and Burari Ground in North Delhi. The move comes amid a dispute with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over permission for a peaceful protest. The party has demanded a date for its demonstration and an explanation for the restrictions. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will hear a plea challenging the closure of Jantar Mantar on October 13. Police will issue new rules for protests at the alternative venues.  

The Indian rupee surged 94 paise to 95.77 against the US dollar at Monday’s opening, recovering from its previous close of 96.71 after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced measures to curb speculation and ease pressure on the currency. Announced Saturday, the measures prohibit rebooking cancelled rupee-linked foreign exchange derivative contracts, lower the threshold for forex transactions without underlying exposure and require a 20% cash reserve against certain contracts. The RBI also opened a special window allowing oil marketing companies to buy dollars directly from the central bank. While the steps may reduce market dollar demand, oil imports, trade payments and capital outflows could continue pressuring the rupee.

The Supreme Court on Sunday directed authorities to ensure that peaceful protesters are not illegally detained during demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked the government to respond to allegations of illegal detentions, police excesses and restrictions on movement in Delhi. The court directed authorities to review barricades and ensure normal Metro and rail services unless restrictions are necessary for public order. It also issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner and DMRC in contempt proceedings. The court will hear the matter again on Tuesday. (PC: X)

Delhi Police have arrested 4 men who claimed links to the Hindu Raksha Dal over the alleged assault of students and women during a protest in the capital on October 10. The incident occurred on DDU Marg during demonstrations linked to the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police identified the accused as Raman Saini, 50, Vivekanand alias Vivek, 32, Kapil Kumar, 27, and Ravinder Singh alias Govind Hindu, 35. The arrests followed a video of the assault circulating on social media. Police said no formal complaint had been received.

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Sunday accused Delhi Police of denying him access to his phone and a lawyer after officers informed him of his grandmother’s death. His response came after police released a video showing him declining an offer to return home and attend her funeral. Dipke claimed officers asked him to call his parents at 3:30 am and demanded that he sign arrest papers before allowing him to contact his lawyers. Police said they offered travel assistance and phone calls, but he declined. Dipke was released from detention on Sunday and travelled to Maharashtra. (PC: HT)

Police detained several protesters during a fresh demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Delhi’s Connaught Place on Sunday evening. The protest came amid continuing demonstrations by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over alleged “vote theft”. Earlier, the Supreme Court directed authorities to review barricading across Delhi and said unarmed protesters could not be detained except under the procedure established by law. It also ordered normal metro and rail services, uninterrupted internet and restored freedom of movement. An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on October 11, 2026, after a passenger’s power bank reportedly caught fire inside the aircraft’s overhead luggage compartment. Flight 6E 6115, operated by an Airbus A321 aircraft, landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Cabin crew members promptly extinguished the fire using fire extinguishers. All passengers and crew members were reported safe, with no injuries reported. IndiGo arranged an alternative aircraft to transport passengers to Chennai and provided refreshments and updates. The incident has renewed concerns about the safe carriage and storage of lithium-battery-powered devices during air travel.
