Several Sikh leaders and families affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh riots protested outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi on August 22, demanding an apology from Congress. The demonstration followed remarks by some Congress leaders allegedly describing former party leader Sajjan Kumar as a “hero” and “role model.” Kumar, who recently died, had been convicted in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Protesters, led by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee leaders, said the comments had reopened painful memories for victims’ families. A 31-year-old Adobe software engineer, Vinay Gupta, was allegedly beaten and strangled to death at his Delhi home following a dispute with his wife, Rekha. According to his family, the argument began over giving medicine to one of their twin children. Rekha allegedly left the house and returned with relatives, who then assaulted Vinay. His family claimed he was beaten repeatedly and strangled, while CCTV cameras were allegedly switched off. Vinay was taken to hospital but was declared dead. Police have arrested his wife, her two brothers and another accused. A case under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the BNS has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing. (PC: India Today)

The wife of Indian merchant navy captain Ajay Pant has called him a “scapegoat” after British authorities arrested him over alleged violations of sanctions involving Russian oil. Pant, 38, was captaining the tanker Smyrtos when British commandos intercepted it in the English Channel in June. Prosecutors allege he knew about the vessel’s approximately 98,000-tonne oil cargo, while his defence says he was following the owner’s instructions. Pant faces charges carrying a maximum 10-year prison sentence, with his trial scheduled for December 15. He is the only crew member charged; India is providing consular assistance. (PC: AFP)

Bar Council of India (BCI) Co-Chairman and senior advocate Y.R. Sadasiva Reddy has demanded Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra’s immediate resignation, alleging financial and administrative irregularities. In a letter, Reddy alleged that around ₹150 crore of BCI funds were transferred to a newly created trust despite objections from some members. He also accused the council of charging law colleges large sums for approval and renewal and alleged nepotism in staff appointments. The demand comes amid a Supreme Court petition challenging Mishra’s continued tenure as BCI chairman. Mishra has faced growing criticism following the controversy involving NALSAR law graduates and a withdrawn BCI directive. 

The Rajasthan government informed the Legislative Assembly that 611 government schools are functioning without their own buildings, including 10 girls’ schools, according to UDISE 2025–26 data. The disclosure has highlighted serious gaps in school infrastructure following an audit conducted after the Jhalawar school accident. Jaipur has 38 such schools, while several blocks in Jhalawar also reported multiple cases. The government announced ₹550 crore for school repairs and renovation and ₹450 crore for constructing buildings. It also plans to make ₹2,500 crore available annually for construction and maintenance. The opposition, however, questioned the government’s preparedness, citing thousands of unsafe schools and classrooms. (PC: Instagram)

An 18-year-old boy, reportedly upset after his parents refused to buy him an iPhone, jumped from Khavdya Dongar near Tisgaon in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. His parents, Murlidhar and Sangeeta Chandwade, spent nearly three hours trying to persuade him to move away from the cliff. During the final moments, his father approached him and attempted to pull him back, but both fell from the hill and died. The mother also fell to her death shortly afterward. Police recovered all three bodies and are investigating the circumstances. The incident has highlighted concerns about emotional distress, impulsive decisions and communication within families. 

A 19-year-old Delhi University student, Sahil Lochab, has alleged in an FIR that he was hit by pellets during student protests at Jantar Mantar on July 20. He claimed he was shot five to six times and suffered around 200 pellet injuries, including to his eye, face, neck, chest and hand. According to his complaint, he underwent two eye surgeries and has permanently lost vision in the affected eye. The FIR was registered against unknown persons under Sections 118 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to shift the production of launch vehicles and satellites to the private sector, according to IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka. The move means ISRO is expected to stop manufacturing launch vehicles itself and instead transfer the required technologies to Indian industries. The space agency will increasingly focus on research, scientific missions, advanced technologies and space infrastructure. The initiative is aimed at expanding private-sector participation, increasing launch capacity and strengthening India’s commercial space industry. The transition represents a major change in ISRO’s traditional role, positioning it more as a technology developer and research organisation. (PC: ISRO)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the relationship between the government and citizens should be based on trust rather than suspicion, while outlining his government’s approach to regulatory reforms and ease of doing business. Addressing the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2026, he said India was shifting from a “Prohibited unless permitted” approach to “Permitted unless prohibited.” Modi highlighted India’s growth prospects amid global uncertainty, saying the country remained a “bright spot” for global growth and hope. He also criticised the earlier licence-raj model, calling its approach “Production Linked Punishment” and contrasting it with the Production Linked Incentive scheme. Mumbai Police have approached the Ministry of Home Affairs to serve, through Interpol, a proclamation order against six absconding accused in the 26/11 terror attack case, paving the way for possible trial in absentia. The six Pakistani nationals are Lashkar-e-Taiba co-founders Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, operations commander Sajid Mir, Abu Alqama, Asim alias Abu Qahafa and Major Abdur Rehman Pasha. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the court that the MHA received the order on August 3 and sought time for a status report. Police seek prosecution under Section 356 of the BNSS, which permits trial in absentia subject to safeguards. The next hearing is scheduled for September 14. (PC: X/@NDTV)
