The incident comes amid other reported cases involving racial slurs against Northeastern residents. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is tightening enforcement of the existing limit on mobile connections from August 24, 2026. Individuals can generally hold up to nine SIM connections across all telecom operators, while the limit is six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states. Telecom operators must reject new SIM applications from subscribers who have already reached the applicable limit. The DoT will use its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to verify subscriber records, with representative photographs of eligible subscribers available from August 23. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made three key requests to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court of India has established a special panel to investigate allegations of violence during recent youth-led protests that forced the education minister to resign last month. The inquiry will examine claims of police brutality against demonstrators as well as allegations that protesters attacked security personnel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Union secretaries to engage directly with university students and young people to bring fresh and unconventional ideas into policymaking. A Ladakh tourist has publicly apologised to Indian Army personnel after a video of her heated confrontation with security forces went viral and sparked widespread criticism. In the video, she questioned a road closure at the Minimarg checkpoint and said, “We are Gen Z,” while expressing frustration over the prolonged wait. She later said the remarks were made in frustration and apologised directly to the soldiers, acknowledging their role in keeping citizens safe. She also asked the Army to forgive her “as a younger sister.” The apology has triggered mixed reactions online, with some welcoming her regret while others remain critical. 

A 25-year-old woman whose confrontation with security personnel during a road closure in Ladakh went viral has apologised to the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Ladakh Police. Speaking to NDTV, she said she regretted her remarks, made after waiting several hours during a VIP movement, and never intended to insult the armed forces or gain popularity. The road near the Minimarg check post in Dras was restricted around Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26. The woman said the viral clip presented the incident negatively and left her deeply distressed. She acknowledged her words were wrong and also apologised to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying she was ashamed that people were hurt. (PC: NDTV)

In the video, she tearfully describes how a man asked whether she was Chinese, prompting her to defend her identity and belonging to India. She says, “Mera abbu India hai, hum bhi India hai... Humko India bolo, Chinese mat bolo.” Her innocent yet powerful words have sparked widespread discussions about the discrimination and stereotyping faced by people from India’s Northeast. The viral video has also renewed calls for greater awareness, respect and acceptance of India’s cultural and ethnic diversity.

The Vande Bharat train reportedly reached nearly 100 kmph while crossing the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a major railway milestone. The Railway Ministry approved raising the maximum permissible speed on the 111-km Katra–Banihal broad-gauge section to 100 kmph. Earlier, speeds were limited to 85 kmph between Katra and Sangaldan and 75 kmph between Sangaldan and Banihal. The speed enhancement is expected to reduce travel time and improve connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir, while supporting tourism, trade and economic activity. However, Northern Railway later clarified that approval was granted, but no train had yet operated at 100 kmph. 

The Supreme Court has formed a High-Powered Committee to investigate allegations of police excesses and violence during last month's NEET protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice R Subhash Reddy, the panel will also examine allegations of targeted violence, harassment and molestation of women protesters. It will assess whether police used force lawfully and proportionately, including allegations involving lathi charges, tear gas, pellet guns and electric batons. The committee will conduct periodic reviews and submit interim findings to the Supreme Court for further action. (PC: India Today)
