Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi met at Nirvachan Sadan on September 26 amid reports of disagreements over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Election Commission said key SIR decisions were approved unanimously. It clarified that Form 6 itself was not changed; an additional declaration requiring linkage with previous electoral rolls was introduced during SIR and was upheld by the Supreme Court. Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh alleged that his car was attacked and vandalised while he was travelling to attend West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Hooghly on Saturday. According to reports, eggs and other objects were thrown at his vehicle, while the car was allegedly damaged during the incident. Ghosh accused BJP-backed supporters of carrying out the attack. The BJP has not accepted the allegation. The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with TMC and BJP leaders and workers exchanging allegations over attacks and clashes. Police intervention and further investigation into the incident were reported. 

Mumbai bid farewell to the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja on September 25 as thousands of devotees gathered to witness the idol’s immersion procession on Anant Chaturdashi, marking the end of the 10-day Ganeshotsav celebrations. The idol was taken out from the Lalbaug pandal amid devotional songs, traditional dhol-tasha music and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya”. Devotees lined the streets to catch a final glimpse of Lord Ganesha before the visarjan. Mumbai Police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation made security and traffic arrangements to manage the large crowds. The annual procession remains one of the city’s major Ganeshotsav events. A female monkey entered a liquor shop in Ranchi’s Ormanjhi area, reportedly drank alcohol from a bottle and fell asleep inside the premises. The incident took place at Block Chowk and was captured in a video that has since gone viral on social media. According to reports, the monkey wandered into the shop and consumed liquor before dozing off. The unusual incident attracted attention from local residents, while shop staff struggled to handle the animal. A rescue team later arrived and safely removed the monkey from the shop. The incident sparked widespread curiosity among people in the area.

A 70-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by two men in Lucknow’s Mohanlalganj area after she objected to them drinking alcohol near her home, police said. The accused, identified as Rajesh alias Guddu, 30, and Hariram Rawat, 34, were arrested following a complaint from the victim’s family. According to police, an argument broke out when the woman objected to the men drinking nearby. The accused allegedly sexually assaulted and attacked her, causing fatal injuries. They then allegedly moved her body to a dark area behind the house to hide the crime. Police used CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the accused. 

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking criminal action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged unilateral decisions concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The petition claims that several decisions were taken despite objections from Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. It challenges changes to electoral software and procedures related to Form 6, seeking to declare decisions taken without the Commission’s concurrence invalid. The plea also seeks action against other Election Commission officials allegedly involved. The allegations are yet to be established in court. (PC: India Today)

Around 5,500 children at 400 anganwadi centres in Vadodara, Gujarat, went without their daily milk supply for a week after Amul stopped deliveries over a payment dispute. The supply was halted on September 17 after the credit balance available with the supplier was exhausted. ICDS officials said delays in receiving monthly bills affected the payment process, while the Vadodara Municipal Corporation said bills were cleared whenever they were received. The Corporation later cleared the pending payment on September 23, following which Amul resumed supplies. All 5,500 milk pouches were distributed to the anganwadi centres on September 24. The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the “disturbed area” status under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, across most of Manipur for six months from October 1, 2026. Thirteen police station areas across five districts remain excluded. Under Section 3, the declaration permits armed forces to assist civil authorities in areas considered sufficiently disturbed or dangerous. AFSPA powers include using force after due warning, destroying armed facilities, arresting people without warrants on specified grounds, and conducting searches without warrants. The Centre has also extended AFSPA in nine Nagaland districts, parts of five others, and Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap, Changlang and Longding, citing a review of the law and order situation.

An Air India pilot was removed from flight AI151 at Zurich Airport on September 6 after ground staff reportedly noticed signs of alcohol consumption before departure. Authorities conducted sobriety tests, with subsequent results indicating a blood alcohol level above the permissible limit. The Zurich–Delhi flight could not operate as scheduled, and Switzerland’s Federal Office of Civil Aviation informed India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The pilot was later sent back to India as a passenger and suspended pending further examination and investigation. The West Bengal government has signed an MoU with Adani Enterprises to explore cultural initiatives connected with Durga Puja and Bengal’s wider artistic heritage. The agreement creates a framework for dialogue, exchanging ideas and assessing potential projects, while the specific nature of the collaboration will be decided through further discussions. The MoU does not create a partnership or joint venture, and both sides will remain independent. Any future funding, sponsorship or financial commitments will require separate written agreements.
