Three suspects have been arrested in Bihar’s Jamui district after videos allegedly showing two Class 10 students being harassed went viral on social media. The incident occurred on September 19, when the girl and her male friend were reportedly returning from coaching classes after visiting Madwa hillock. Police said an FIR was registered under the POCSO Act and relevant BNS provisions, and an SIT headed by SDPO Deepti Monali was formed. Around seven people have been identified from the video, with raids continuing for arrests. The State Women’s Commission sought a report from authorities. Police also initiated steps to remove the videos, while officials warned against sharing material that identifies minors.

IIT Bombay has begun replacing ceiling fans in hostel rooms with wall-mounted ones, and the first batch has reached campus. The move comes days after the death of Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old second-year BTech student, at his hostel on September 18. The institute says the change is part of a planned hostel renovation and is not linked to the recent deaths. Wakode's family has alleged harassment and caste-based discrimination. Police have booked former Dean Suryanarayana Doolla under the SC/ST Atrocities Act and for abetment to suicide, and students have protested. A newborn elephant calf, swept away by the Teesta river's strong current, was rescued by fishermen in Jalpaiguri's Gajoldoba area and reunited with its mother. The five-day-old calf was separated from its herd on Monday morning while crossing the swollen river near the Saraswatipur tea garden in Baikunthapur forest. Fishermen spotted it floating near the barrage, trunk raised, sinking and resurfacing. They rowed to mid-river, pulled it onto their boat and alerted the forest department. Baikunthapur DFO Mudit Kumar said the calf was released into the forest in good health, and the herd accepted it. The mother was seen rushing to her calf, trumpeting with joy.

Three people have been arrested in Bihar's Jamui after a disturbing video showing two Class 10 students being harassed surfaced online. The action came hours after social media users tagged Bihar Police seeking action. The incident took place around 7 pm on Saturday on the Jamui-Lakhisarai road, when the teenagers were returning on a scooter from coaching classes. In the video, a group surrounds the couple, pulls the boy away and a masked man grabs the girl as she pleads to be let go. Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident and demanded action under the POCSO Act. Minister Sunil Kumar called it condemnable and said police will arrest all those guilty.

A Supreme Court-appointed SIT has found 105 alleged cases of donation theft at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Investigators examined CCTV footage, witness statements and donation records. They also checked digital logs and bank records to trace the missing money. The findings were included in a report submitted to the Supreme Court on September 16. Eight temple employees were arrested earlier in the case. Police said around ₹79.85 lakh was recovered from them. A second SIT was formed in July to investigate the case. The Uttar Pradesh government told the Supreme Court that the charge sheet will be filed by September 25.

Jamui SP Bishwajeet Dayal said police identified around seven people from the video. An FIR has been filed under the POCSO Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A Special Investigation Team led by a woman officer is conducting raids to arrest the remaining suspects. Police also traced the victims after the video surfaced online. Authorities have started steps to remove the video from social media platforms.  

The death by suicide of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode at IIT Bombay has put student suicides across IITs back in focus. The institute has suspended a professor named in an FIR and apologised for its earlier statement. The student's father has alleged abetment on grounds of caste discrimination. Three days of protests followed on the Powai campus.   The Centre told Parliament that 39 students died by suicide across IITs between 2018 and 2023. A Supreme Court-appointed task force found that 90% of faculty lacked adequate training to support distressed students. Counselling drives, hostel changes and official inquiries are under way. Age is no barrier for 85-year-old Lal Chand Godara, an Army veteran who has completed his Master of Arts from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), scoring 965 out of 1,200 marks.   Godara, who served in the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars, returned to his books at 76 after his grandchildren's questions revived his wish to finish his education. He graduated in 2023, at 81.   He joined the Army before turning 20 and later worked as a Yard Master in the Haryana Transport Department. His son, Dr Sahib Ram Godara, confirmed the news. Godara now plans to pursue a PhD or a law degree. (PC: The Indian Express)

IIT Bombay has removed Prof Suryanarayana Doolla as dean, three days after second-year student Sahil Wakode died by suicide following a mid-semester exam.   Wakode died on September 18, hours after he was allegedly found using a mobile phone during the exam. Doolla, the invigilator, had reported the alleged malpractice. Wakode's parents have alleged harassment and caste-based discrimination, and Doolla's name is in the FIR. The allegations are under investigation.   The action followed Director Prof Shireesh Kedare signing an 18-point charter of demands from protesting students. It includes an independent inquiry and reforms in counselling and discipline. The institute said Kedare has not resigned. (PC: India Today)
