A United Nations report warns that certain areas in the Indo-Gangetic basin, India, have crossed the groundwater depletion tipping point. By 2025, the entire northwestern region is expected to suffer critically low groundwater availability. The "Interconnected Disaster Risks Report 2023" by the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security identifies six environmental tipping points, including groundwater depletion, leading to irreversible ecosystem and climate changes. Over 70% of groundwater is used for agriculture, but many major aquifers worldwide are depleting faster than they can naturally replenish, risking food production and water access. India, the world's largest groundwater user, is particularly vulnerable, with Punjab and Haryana facing imminent shortages. Jack O'Connor, the report's lead author, emphasizes the need for urgent action to avert these crises.

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, during a podcast with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, advocated for Indian youth to work 70 hours a week to boost the nation's productivity and compete with rapidly progressing economies. He cited India's low work productivity and pointed to corruption and bureaucratic delays as hindrances. Murthy urged today's youth to take inspiration from post-World War 2 efforts in Germany and Japan, where citizens worked extra hours to drive economic growth. He emphasized the need for Indian youngsters to dedicate themselves to the nation's development and work tirelessly to catch up with global leaders.

Pakistani troops have fired on Indian soldiers and border posts over a dozen times since the 2021 ceasefire agreement, said Indian security officials. The latest incident occurred on Thursday in Jammu's Arnia sector, injuring two BSF jawans and three civilians. A security official said these violations show Pakistan doesn't want peace at the border, often using fire to divert attention from infiltration or during major political developments. Per BSF data, Pakistan violated the ceasefire at least 6 times in 2022 and 4 times this year. Most 2021 incidents occurred before the ceasefire agreement in February 2021 between India and Pakistan DGs. Thursday's ceasefire violation by Pakistan on the eve of the 76th anniversary of Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India bears political significance on both sides of the border.

Tensions escalated along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir as Pakistan Rangers initiated unprovoked firing at five Indian posts in the Arnia and Suchetgarh sectors. Two Border Security Force personnel and one civilian sustained injuries. The firing, which started around 8 pm, led to a befitting retaliation from the Indian side. Panic ensued among residents as mortar shells landed in civilian areas. Injured individuals were taken to GMC Hospital in Jammu, while civilians, including migrant laborers, fled their homes in affected areas. The situation remains tense.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Shirdi and performed pooja at Shri Saibaba Samadhi Temple. He inaugurated the new Darshan Queue Complex, costing ₹112 crores, designed to accommodate over 10,000 devotees with air-conditioned waiting halls, amenities, and 14,538 lockers. Modi also performed the Jal Pujan of Nilwande Dam, overseeing its canal network connecting 182 villages, developed at Rs. 5,177 crore. This marks his second visit to Shirdi in four years, emphasizing improved facilities for devotees and significant infrastructural developments in the region.

As Diwali approaches, like every year Delhi's air quality becomes an issue of concern.  According to SAFAR-India data, the national capital's air quality stayed in the 'poor' range on Thursday with an AQI of 256. Areas around Delhi University saw very poor air at 316 AQI. Gurugram was moderate at 176 AQI, while Noida was poor at 256. The drop in air quality is due to lower temperatures, slower winds, and emissions from firecrackers during Dussehra, stubble burning, and vehicles that allow pollutants to accumulate. Ahead of Diwali, authorities have re-launched the "Red Light On, Gaadi Off" campaign and urged neighboring states to ban firecrackers to curb pollution. With winter approaching, once again the national capital braces for hazardous air pollution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted the invitation from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to inaugurate the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. The temple's construction committee aims to complete the ground floor of the three-storey temple by December this year. The installation of Lord Ram's idol in the Garbhagriha is set for January 22, 2024. This significant development follows the 2019 Supreme Court verdict, allowing the construction of the temple at the disputed site and the allocation of an alternative five-acre plot for a mosque.          

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized an end to the era of leniency towards social media platforms, stating that strict accountability will be enforced globally. Chandrasekhar's comments followed a US federal lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of harming young users' mental health. He highlighted the need for platforms to be more accountable, insisting that the days of immunity are over. Chandrasekhar affirmed India's commitment to ensuring citizens' protection, indicating a zero-tolerance policy for non-compliance with IT rules. Meta, criticized for prioritizing profit over user security, defended its efforts to keep teens safe online amid growing scrutiny.

In a significant address, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasized the systemic misuse of India's legal framework to oppress specific communities, citing Supreme Court judgments. He called for judges to be cognizant of social realities, particularly the historical wrongs committed against marginalized groups. Noting the denial of voting rights to oppressed communities in both India and the US, the CJI stressed the vital role of constitutional democracies in safeguarding and uplifting these communities. Chandrachud also defended his minority opinion on same-sex marriages, asserting that judicial opinions often reflect constitutional values and personal conscience.

The Chhattisgarh High Court has issued a noteworthy verdict, asserting that wives should not be treated as mere hired help or bonded laborers in their matrimonial homes. This pronouncement was made in a case where a husband had sought a divorce, claiming cruelty on the grounds that his wife refused to live in his village. The court, after careful consideration of the evidence and circumstances, ruled that the husband's insistence on a specific place of residence without a valid reason did not constitute a legitimate basis for divorce. The judgment underscores the court's commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of spouses in matrimonial disputes.
