Mumbai's iconic red double-decker buses will permanently go off the streets starting this week. The last few remaining double-deckers, including open-deck buses, will be retired as they hit 15 years of service life. Commuter groups have urged BEST to preserve at least two buses at its museum before they disappear. The double-deckers have been symbolic of Mumbai since 1937 and featured in Bollywood films. BEST stopped adding them after 2008, replacing them with leased electric double-deckers. Open-deck buses for sightseeing are planned as the original double-deckers make their final run.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has announced the Supreme Court will soon join the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) platform. The NJDG provides tracking of pendency of court cases across India. Justice Chandrachud said the Supreme Court's inclusion in the NJDG will bring more transparency and accountability to the judiciary. The data grid currently covers district and taluk courts and some High Courts. Integrating the Supreme Court marks a major step toward establishing an open judicial system.

A colonel, a major, and a deputy superintendent of police were killed in an encounter with terrorists in Anantnag, J&K. Col Manpreet Singh, Major Aashish Dhonchak and DSP Himanyun Muzamil Bhat lost their lives during the Kokernag gunfight. Col Singh was the commanding officer of the Army's 19 Rashtriya Rifles counter-insurgency unit. Their bodies were retrieved from the dense forests. Top officials including 15 Corps Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai rushed to the site. Troops had launched an operation on terrorist inputs and came under heavy fire, critically injuring the 3 officers. Two terrorists were also killed in the encounter which is still underway. This was the second encounter in 24 hours after 1 soldier died in a separate Rajouri gunfight. India offered the use of IAF One aircraft to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau after his plane developed a technical snag before departure from New Delhi post the G20 summit, ANI reports. However, Canada declined and opted to wait for a backup plane. The alternate plane arriving Monday was diverted to London, further delaying his departure. MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar thanked Trudeau for his G20 presence on PM Modi's behalf. Trudeau worked from his hotel before finally departing Tuesday afternoon. The snag involved replacing a part, Canada's National Defence said. India's offer highlights the cooperative spirit between the two countries.

The Nipah virus has claimed two lives in Kozhikode, Kerala, the union Health minister confirmed Tuesday. Two others are also infected. The first death occurred on August 30, the second on Monday. Kerala's Chief Minister said Nipah infection was confirmed after testing saliva samples of four people, of which two were positive. The state government has set up a control room in Kozhikode, advised using masks, and is monitoring those in close contact with the deceased. The Centre has sent a team to assist Kerala in containing the outbreak. The state government urged caution but said there is no need to panic as measures are in place to manage the situation.
