India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said at least 288 Indian nationals remain uncontactable in Nepal, while around 200 others are stranded on the Chinese side of the border. The disaster, triggered by a major glacial collapse and debris flow, has destroyed roads, bridges and settlements near the Nepal-China border. A fresh flood threat has emerged in Nepal’s Rasuwa district after a new barrier lake formed near the source of the Bhote Koshi River close to the Nepal-China border. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said Chinese authorities reported that around 2 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in the lake by Thursday morning, with another 3 million cubic metres potentially entering over the next three days. Authorities fear the barrier could breach and trigger another flood downstream. The DHM has urged residents, travellers, security personnel and rescue teams to stay away from riverbanks and remain in safe areas. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grief over devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet that have killed at least 157 people, while hundreds, including security personnel and tourists, remain missing. The UN said it is supporting Nepal’s government-led response by assessing the disaster’s scale and delivering urgent assistance, with humanitarian teams mobilising supplies and personnel. The floods were triggered after an avalanche blocked the Lhende tributary of the Bhote Koshi near Timure at the Nepal-China border. With no rainfall reported, residents had little warning. Authorities said 391 tourists and 44 security personnel were missing, while nine hydropower projects, commercial banks, 19 motorable bridges and numerous public and private properties were swept away. Pakistan activated spies and sleeper cells inside India to locate the country’s S-400 air defence systems during Operation Sindoor, former Western Air Command chief Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra has said. Mishra said the Russian-made systems became a major threat to Pakistan’s air operations, keeping its fighter jets far from the Indian border. He said Pakistan also used other means, including satellite assistance, to track the systems. Mishra further revealed that women fighter pilots carried out multiple combat missions during the conflict, striking terror targets before later targeting Pakistani airbases and command-and-control centres. At least 65 Americans and 25 Canadians are among hundreds missing after devastating flash floods and mudslides near the Nepal-Tibet border, Nepali authorities said. A 61-year-old woman from West Bengal escaped the devastating Nepal flash floods after her Chinese visa for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage was rejected. Tapati Singha was among 33 people from the state planning the 13-day journey through a Kolkata-based travel agency. After her visa was denied, she changed her plans and travelled to Ladakh instead. The remaining 32 members of the group are now missing, with no information about their whereabouts. The travel agency’s Nepal-based partner has been unable to contact the travellers, while four agency officials have travelled to Nepal to gather information. (PC: NDTV)
