Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia faced his sixth electoral defeat in the Sikkim assembly elections. Losing by 4,346 votes to Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha in the Barfung seat, Bhutia's party, the Sikkim Democratic Front, was reduced to just one seat. Despite merging his Hamro Sikkim Party with the SDF last year, Bhutia's electoral fortunes continue to elude him. Political strategist Prashant Kishor has advised the public to ignore “useless discussions” by “idle, fake journalists, loudmouth politicians, and self-proclaimed social media experts” following exit polls predicting a BJP-led NDA victory. Kishor, who has been vocal about the BJP’s prospects, reiterated that the party is likely to secure around 300 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, mirroring its 2019 performance. Following the six-week 2024 Lok Sabha elections, exit polls predict a major win for the ruling BJP-led NDA. Twelve exit polls, including India Today- Axis My India and News 24-Today's Chanakya, forecast the NDA securing between 342 to 401 seats. They also predict NDA dominance in Karnataka and Maharashtra, and a poor showing for the Left-led alliance in Kerala. In West Bengal, the BJP is expected to improve, potentially becoming the largest party.
