INDIA bloc leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Rajghat on Thursday to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition has been demanding his resignation over alleged irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Earlier, Kharge hosted an INDIA bloc lunch meeting in Delhi’s Connaught Place, attended by several opposition leaders. Security was tightened across central Delhi, with around 5,000 police personnel deployed and several roads barricaded. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Delhi Police over an FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others following an INDIA bloc protest. Yadav questioned the police action, saying, “Delhi Police has no work except registering FIRs.” The FIR was filed over the alleged unauthorised entry of protesters into Akashvani Bhawan after their march towards the Election Commission was stopped. Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as an advisor to the West Bengal government, with the rank of a Cabinet Minister. He will advise the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, which is headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that women police personnel shoved her to the ground and scratched her during an INDIA bloc protest in central Delhi on Wednesday. Rahul Gandhi was taken into a police van, while Priyanka Gandhi lay on the road holding a copy of the Constitution before women police personnel removed her. Around 300 INDIA bloc MPs are set to protest at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Earlier, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hosted a lunch for Opposition MPs at Sagar Ratna in central Delhi. Rahul Gandhi said the leaders decided to continue their protest after they were not allowed to meet the Election Commission on Tuesday. The Opposition has accused the poll panel of electoral irregularities and raised concerns over voter-list revisions. Delhi Police have deployed personnel and strengthened security around central Delhi as the protest is expected to draw a large gathering.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been booked for allegedly trespassing into Akashvani Bhawan in Central Delhi during an opposition protest against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The FIR was registered at Parliament Street Police Station under relevant sections, according to a police officer. Around 200 INDIA bloc MPs had marched from Makar Dwar of Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday. Police stopped the protesters at Akashvani Bhawan after they had covered around 700 metres. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday evening after a sit-in of over eight hours at Akashvani Bhawan, according to Congress sources. Police had earlier said the sit-in would not be allowed overnight and asked protesters to disperse. The Opposition is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. "We want to meet the CEC," Priyanka said.
