External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said politics now often “trumps” economics in today’s uncertain world. From 28 November 2025, the DoT has mandated that messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, and others can only be used on devices containing the active SIM linked to the registered mobile number — effectively banning use on devices without the original SIM. Web versions of these apps will now automatically log users out every six hours, requiring QR‑code re‑authentication. The rules aim to boost cybersecurity by closing loopholes exploited for fraud or fraud‑related misuse. App‑providers have 90 days to implement SIM‑binding and must submit compliance reports within 120 days, or face penalties under relevant telecom laws. (PC: AFP)

The death toll from the deadly fire in Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court housing complex has risen to 146. More than 150 people are still missing, and 79 are injured. Seven of the eight tower blocks in Tai Po caught fire on Wednesday, spreading quickly due to flammable construction materials. Thousands of people have visited the site to lay flowers and offer prayers during a three-day mourning period. Police have arrested 11 people, including engineers and subcontractors, on corruption and manslaughter charges linked to the building’s renovation. Fire alarms in all eight blocks were not working. More than 600 people have died after severe floods and landslides hit Indonesia and Thailand. Indonesia has reported 442 deaths, while 170 people have died in southern Thailand. Malaysia has also confirmed three deaths. The disaster began after a tropical storm formed in the Malacca Strait, affecting over four million people across the region. Many areas in Indonesia and Thailand are cut off, and rescue teams are using helicopters to reach stranded families. He explained that America needs skilled people and that good talent is always in short supply. Musk also spoke about border control and said that weak rules under the Biden government led to illegal immigration. He added that the H-1B visa programme has been misused by some companies but should not be shut down. Musk said US tech firms depend on skilled workers from countries like India and China, and limiting visas could hurt America. 

A fresh FIR has been filed against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, creating new trouble for the Congress just before the winter session of Parliament. The Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing has named the two leaders and six others for alleged illegal takeover of Associated Journals Ltd through Young Indian. The Congress says the FIR is a political move and claims old cases are revived whenever the party raises key issues. The timing is important, as the court will announce its verdict on December 16.
