West Bengal authorities have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, for three days, from October 18 to 20, 2026, in parts of Kolkata following a deadly stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal. The incident on October 17 claimed 19 lives and injured several people amid heavy crowds and rainfall. The restrictions aim to maintain public order and prevent further crowd-related incidents. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna defended the company’s innovative approach as its first all-electric car, the Luce, made its India debut in New Delhi on October 17, 2026. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Vigna said true innovation requires pushing boundaries rather than simply following public opinion. The Luce features four electric motors producing 1,035 horsepower and a 122 kWh battery, with a claimed range of approximately 529 km. Despite criticism of its design, Vigna expressed confidence in the vehicle. A stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata on October 17, 2026, claimed at least 19 lives and left around 35 people injured. The incident occurred around 7:40 pm amid heavy rainfall and overcrowding, with reports suggesting a section of the pandal collapsed under crowd pressure. Eyewitnesses cited narrow entry and exit gates and inadequate lighting. Rescue teams evacuated victims to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered an investigation, and several organisers were detained. The pandal was closed, while authorities arranged medical assistance and launched a helpline. 

The father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim has questioned the CBI after the Supreme Court granted bail to former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in a financial irregularities case. He said the agency must be held accountable for its actions.   Doctors associated with the justice movement also criticised the CBI’s investigation. Dr Utpal Bandyopadhyay demanded a public explanation for delays in the case. Dr Aniket Mahato alleged that the agency had examined only seven of 147 listed witnesses in two years. Ghosh was arrested over alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.  

Journalist Richa Parashar has filed a police complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over an alleged pushing incident at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi. She claimed that Gandhi grabbed her hand during a protest on Monday, causing her to fall on the stairs.   Parashar, who is three months pregnant, has sought the registration of an FIR against Gandhi and others. She alleged that she faced mistreatment and threats. The Congress has denied her claims, saying a video does not support her account. The BJP has criticised Gandhi over the allegations. An investigation is awaited.  

Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar has recalled the frightening moments of an assault that left him fearing for his life. In an interview with Sky News Arabia, he said he was hit hard on the head and drifted in and out of consciousness.   He described scenes of panic and passengers screaming after the cockpit door opened. Machchhar also praised his colleague for taking control of the aircraft during the emergency. He said the pilot’s quick action helped save the day. The captain added that he would remember his colleague’s bravery for the rest of his life.  

French President Emmanuel Macron has said there is “no place for violence” after protests over falling education standards and the rising cost of living turned violent across France.   Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said around 550,000 people joined the protests, including 110,000 in Paris. About 400 people were arrested, and 60 police officers were injured. Two officers were taken to hospital unconscious.   Protesters damaged public buildings in several cities. A tourism office in Lyon was set on fire, while town halls in Lille, Marseille and Limoges faced damage or arson. Shops were also looted in several cities.
