In Varanasi’s Madanpura, a unique Durga Puja tradition continues for 260 years. The Durga idol at Purana Durga Bati, made in 1767 with Ganga clay, straw, bamboo, and jute, is still worshipped every year. Legend says the idol refused to move during visarjan. Even 15 strong men could not lift it. That night, Maa Durga appeared in the dream of Kali Prasanna Mukhopadhyay, saying she wished to stay in Kashi. Since then, the Mukherjee family and locals worship the same idol each year. The six-foot idol remains with her children—Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik, and Ganesh. (PC: India Today)

Ukraine faced one of its heaviest Russian attacks in recent months. The 12-hour bombardment involved nearly 600 drones and dozens of missiles. At least 4 people were killed in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl, and more than 70 were injured across Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strikes “vile” and vowed that Ukraine “will strike back.” He said over 100 civilian sites were damaged, including homes, a bakery, a rubber factory, and Kyiv’s Institute of Cardiology, where two people died. The Chitrakoot Ramlila of Kashi claims to be the world's oldest Ramlila, reportedly started 485 years ago by Megha Bhagat, a disciple of saint-poet Tulsidas. This traditional 22-day festival preserves ancient customs including the Mukut Pujan ceremony and Nakkataiyya procession. The performance takes place in Varanasi's Chitrakoot area, maintaining centuries-old theatrical traditions that dramatize episodes from the Ramayana. The festival represents one of India's most enduring cultural continuities, blending religious devotion with community theater. Local performers and audiences participate in rituals that have been passed down through generations, making it a living repository of Hindu religious and cultural practices that connects contemporary devotees with medieval spiritual traditions.

Russian freediver Alexey Molchanov plunged 126 meters (413 feet) beneath the Mediterranean Sea in a single breath to establish a new world record in freediving. The record was achieved under the auspices of AIDA International, the governing body for freediving competitions. Molchanov’s feat underscores the limits of human breath-hold diving and raises the bar for depth performance in the discipline. Observers say the dive was executed with exceptional control over ascent and descent, and will be widely celebrated in the freediving community.  

For the first time, New York City will host Sharadiya Durga Puja at Times Square on October 3–4, 2025. Organized by the Times Square Durga Utsav Association, the event will be staged at Father Duffy Square, inspired by Kolkata’s Maddox Square and Dhaka’s Dhakeshwari Temple. A specially crafted idol from Kumartuli, Kolkata, will be the centerpiece. Traditional rituals like Sindoor Khela and Dhunuchi Naach will be performed, alongside cultural programs by artists from India and Bangladesh. Open to all, the festival will also be streamed globally, showcasing unity and cultural pride for the diaspora.      

Delhi's IGI Airport and several schools received bomb threat emails on Sunday, prompting heightened security measures. The sender claimed affiliation with terrorist group "Terrorise 111," warning that bombs had been planted with potential explosions within 24 hours. Institutions targeted included CRPF Public School and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, with police, fire, and bomb disposal teams conducting thorough searches. Authorities later declared the threats hoaxes after comprehensive investigations. Similar incidents have occurred previously in Delhi, with over 50 schools receiving threats from "Terrorizers 111" demanding cryptocurrency ransom in August. Police suspect the sender used VPN to hide their identity. Security agencies remain vigilant despite the hoax nature.

A new report Children in India, 2025 reveals alarming rates of elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol among Indian kids. In the 5–9 age group, West Bengal leads with 67 % showing high triglycerides, followed by Sikkim (64.6 %) and Assam (57 %) . Among adolescents (10–19 years), 16 % exhibit high triglycerides; Bengal again tops at 42.5 % . These lipid imbalances damage blood vessels, foster early atherosclerosis, and raise long-term cardiovascular risk . Experts point to rising junk food consumption, sedentary lifestyle, and obesity. Self-styled spiritual leader Chaitanyananda Saraswati was arrested by Delhi Police in a hotel in Agra, after evading authorities since early August. He is accused of sexually harassing 17 female students at a management institute in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. Investigators say he allegedly monitored students via CCTV, withheld their certificates, and used coercion. During the arrest, fake visiting cards claiming diplomatic status (UN, BRICS) were seized. A court has already denied his anticipatory bail in an associated fraud case involving multiple bank accounts and fixed deposits. (PC: ANI)  

A Vatican City-themed Durga Puja pandal in Ranchi replaced Jesus Christ's image with Lord Krishna following VHP objections. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad alleged the original display by R R Sporting Club "hurt Hindu religious sentiments" and encouraged conversion. Club patron Vicky Yadav denied the change was due to protests, claiming committee members decided to "show all religions on the same platform." He said the design aimed to promote religious harmony, inspired by India's multi-faith culture. VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal had criticized the original theme, questioning why Hindu deities weren't displayed at churches or madrasas. The club has organized Durga Puja for 50 years, replicating Kolkata's 2022 Sreebhumi Sporting Club Vatican theme.
