PayPal has reportedly laid off around 600 employees in India, about 10% of its workforce, amid a global restructuring. According to reports, the cuts affected teams in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad across technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance. Some employees said they were informed during a group call on August 31 and immediately lost access to company systems. Reports said affected workers were offered job assistance and promised one month’s salary as severance. A separate report claimed up to 25% of PayPal’s Indian workforce, or about 1,500 employees, could eventually be affected. PayPal is reportedly planning 20% global job cuts.   (PC: India Today)

Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of attacking the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr in the Strait of Hormuz, killing two Filipino sailors. Saudi shipping company Bahri said the vessel was involved in a security incident late Monday while transiting the waterway. Maritime security firms reported that Sidr and the South Korean-owned Senegal Prosperity, each carrying two million barrels of Saudi crude, were struck by unknown projectiles near Oman’s Musandam Peninsula. Iran has not directly responded to the allegation and said two tankers caught fire after hitting mines on an unauthorised route. The incident came amid escalating US-Iranian military exchanges. Rohit Sharma was reportedly ready to retire after a selection committee member told him in July that the panel had decided to move on and asked if he could announce his exit after the Lord’s ODI against England. The report said Rohit was angry but agreed. However, the former India captain scored 138 at Lord’s, temporarily halting retirement speculation, though the century did not guarantee his place for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust on September 2 appointed Air Marshal (retired) Jeetendra Mishra, who led the IAF’s Western Air Command during Operation Sindoor, as its first full-time CEO. Mishra, 60, was selected from 5,585 applicants through a two-month process. The move comes as the trust seeks more professional administration amid allegations of donation pilferage and financial irregularities. Mishra retired on April 30, 2026, and will oversee temple operations, devotees, security and financial systems. The trust also appointed three new trustees. Delhi Police’s Special Cell questioned former bureaucrat Ashish Joshi for around nine hours on Wednesday over social media posts allegedly related to the Election Commission of India. Joshi, a former Controller of Communications in the Department of Telecommunications, was questioned in connection with a case registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said he was confronted with his social media posts and released after his claims were verified. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit earlier said Joshi was taken by police while on a morning walk in Nehru Park. Police later dropped Joshi home.

The EU and NATO have vowed to step up pressure on Russia after Germany blamed Moscow for a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport, calling it a “new escalation” on European soil. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia was growing increasingly reckless, while NATO chief Mark Rutte pledged full solidarity with Germany. Moscow denied responsibility and demanded evidence. Former Indian Air Force fighter pilot and Vir Chakra awardee Abhinandan Varthaman has taken premature retirement after 22 years of service and joined Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a commercial pilot, PTI reported, citing sources. The former Group Captain reportedly joined the airline in August. Varthaman has not commented, while FLY91 declined to discuss employee information. He became a national hero in February 2019 after downing a Pakistani F-16 during an aerial dogfight, before his MiG-21 Bison was hit and he was captured in Pakistan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he does not believe India and Iran are negotiating a trade deal, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek during the SCO Summit. Rubio said countries should not help Iran evade US sanctions or create mechanisms to generate revenue for Tehran, warning that such countries could face sanctions. Modi said India remained committed to strengthening its long-standing friendship with Iran and expanding bilateral trade. The two leaders also discussed regional developments, peace, commercial shipping and cooperation through BRICS and the SCO.

Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has alleged political vendetta after his name was deleted from Punjab’s draft electoral rolls under the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and marked “permanently shifted”. Chadha, who quit AAP and joined the BJP in April, said his voter ID remains registered in Mohali and claimed the AAP was using state machinery against leaders who left the party. He said the protected-list provision for public representatives was violated. Punjab’s claims and objections window remains open until September 12, while final rolls are expected in October. The disaster has killed more than 1,200 people, while over 4,000 remain missing, according to the latest figures cited in the report. At least 161 bodies remained unidentified at the hospital as of September 2, with doctors struggling to collect fingerprints or other identification marks. DNA samples are being collected, while unidentified bodies are temporarily buried for possible exhumation. In hard-hit Nuwakot, families are also holding symbolic Hindu funerals using straw effigies for missing relatives.
