Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that her car was attacked with stones, mud and slippers while she was travelling through North 24 Parganas to meet the family of deceased TMC worker Birju Keot. Senior Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Qari Saeed Abdul Aziz was found dead at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, after reportedly eating at an unfamiliar restaurant, according to reports. He later reached Quba Mosque for prayers but suddenly collapsed near the entrance and died. The cause of his death remains unclear. Qari Saeed was reportedly responsible for supporting the families of Lashkar members killed in encounters in Jammu and Kashmir. His death comes days after senior LeT operative Rizwan Hanif claimed that more than 30 members of the banned group had been killed by “unknown men” across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir over the past few years. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has assured protesting students that the government will investigate alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and take strict action against those found guilty. Meanwhile, the health of student leader Devendra Nath Mahto deteriorated during his hunger strike after his blood glucose level fell to 53. Six protesters are on hunger strike. Indian national Varun Batchigari, 20, has been arrested in Germany over the alleged first-degree murder of his 19-year-old girlfriend, Julissa Rubi Salazar, in Arizona. Salazar was found dead in her Tucson apartment on August 6 after her family requested a welfare check. Police allege Batchigari fled the US after the killing, travelling from Tucson to Houston and then to Berlin. He was detained at a German airport following an arrest warrant. Reports say Salazar had planned to end their relationship after an alleged earlier assault. A 40-year-old West Bengal woman, Shaheda Fakir, has allegedly been pushed into Bangladesh after being detained in Navi Mumbai as a suspected illegal infiltrator. Shaheda’s family says she is an Indian citizen and presented her birth certificate, school records, land documents and other identity papers to authorities. She was reportedly taken to Assam before being pushed across the border and later reached Satkhira, where a local family gave her shelter. Her family plans to approach the Calcutta High Court seeking her return. A migrant workers’ forum has urged the Ministry of External Affairs to verify her documents and intervene diplomatically.
