Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has criticised the treatment of his team at the FIFA World Cup in the United States. He said travel restrictions and visa denials have affected Iran's preparations ahead of Sunday's match against Belgium. Ghalenoei claimed the team was forced to shorten training after being denied permission to travel earlier. He also said several support staff members were refused visas. “We are here for football, not politics,” he said. US officials maintain that restrictions were known in advance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built naval ships — Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray — in Kolkata. The vessels were designed and built in India and contain more than 75% indigenous content. Speaking at the event, Modi said, “No nation can become a big power without maritime prowess.” The ships will strengthen India's capabilities in maritime combat, hydrographic surveys and anti-submarine warfare. The government said the vessels reflect the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. More than 200 MSMEs contributed to their construction, highlighting India's growing shipbuilding and defence capabilities.

The BCCI on Sunday announced India's squad for the three-match ODI series against England in July. Virat Kohli returned to the team after missing the Afghanistan series due to injury, though his selection remains subject to fitness. Shubman Gill will continue as captain, with Shreyas Iyer serving as vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Harshit Rana also made comebacks to the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harsh Dubey and Prince Yadav were left out. Rohit Sharma retained his place, while Hardik Pandya remained unavailable due to fitness concerns. The series begins on July 14. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing renewed pressure after reports suggested he could announce plans to step down. However, Business Secretary Peter Kyle said there was “nothing” to indicate the reports were true. Speaking to Sky News, Kyle said Starmer was spending the weekend reflecting on the “political realities, challenges and opportunities” facing him. He added that the prime minister remained focused on governing and putting the country first. The comments come as more Labour MPs call for Starmer to resign following recent political setbacks and growing speculation about his future as party leader.

The United States and Iran began high-level talks in Switzerland on Sunday as efforts continue to end months of conflict. The discussions focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security and maintaining stability in the Middle East. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington hopes to make progress on both the nuclear issue and the Lebanon ceasefire. The talks follow a preliminary agreement signed earlier this week by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Special arrangements were made across several states as more than 22 lakh students appeared for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on Sunday. In Delhi, the government set up cooling zones at all 97 exam centres for parents waiting outside in the heat. Drinking water, medical support and seating facilities were also provided. NEET candidates were allowed free travel on DTC buses by showing their admit cards. Andhra Pradesh also offered free bus travel for aspirants. The measures were introduced to make travel easier and ensure comfort for students and their families on exam day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said yoga is a necessity for a better future of the world while addressing International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s iconic Red Road on Sunday. Speaking on the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” Modi said yoga helps people remain flexible, energetic and mentally strong as they grow older.   The Prime Minister urged people to make yoga a part of their daily routine rather than celebrating it only once a year. He said yoga promotes physical health, mental wellness and inner peace. Modi also paid tribute to Bengal’s spiritual icons, including Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda, for helping spread yoga’s message across the world.  

The Indian Navy marked International Yoga Day 2026 with a unique underwater yoga session at INS Satvahana, where 40 submariners performed synchronized yoga exercises beneath the water. Led by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma and naval yoga practitioners, the session showcased breath control, focus, endurance and mental discipline required for underwater operations.   The submariners were seen performing yoga postures, including bhujangasana, demonstrating how yoga can support mindfulness and self-control in challenging environments. The event reflected the Navy’s commitment to holistic fitness and well-being. This year’s International Yoga Day theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights yoga’s role in physical fitness, mental wellness and emotional strength.  

The United States and Iran are set to begin the first round of peace talks in Switzerland on Sunday. Reports said Washington wants Iran to allow UN inspectors to visit its nuclear sites. In return, the US may release part of Iran’s frozen funds, starting with a $6 billion account in Qatar. US Vice President JD Vance said the goal is to create an “actual structure” for future negotiations. The talks come under a 60-day interim peace deal signed last week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road on Sunday. Thousands of people joined the mass yoga session and performed exercises with the Prime Minister. Modi guided participants through different yoga asanas and highlighted the benefits of yoga. Addressing the gathering, he said, “Yoga brings people together.” Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” he said yoga supports physical health, mental well-being and active ageing. Yoga Day events were also organised at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide, with participation from Indian missions across the globe.
