Nepal has sought climate-related compensation from India, China and the United States following the catastrophic Bhotekoshi River flash flood on August 26. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said Nepal was shifting its approach from “aid” to “justice and compensation”, arguing that major greenhouse gas emitters have a moral and historical responsibility to support vulnerable countries. The Rajasthan government has begun rebuilding a government school in Rampura village in Jaipur’s Bagru Assembly constituency after the Cockroach Janata Party protested over its poor condition on August 21. The old, dilapidated building was demolished on Wednesday to make way for a new structure, with around ₹18 lakh sanctioned for the project. CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka called the move a victory for students, saying children had been studying in extremely poor conditions. Four people, including a young child, were killed and more than 50 others injured after a US missile strike hit a residential home hosting a wedding celebration in Kuhestak, Sirik county, southern Iran, according to the Iranian Red Crescent. An Iranian government video showed extensive damage and debris at the site. The United States said its latest strikes targeted Iran’s Revolutionary Guards after alleged attempted attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members. Two soldiers from 1 Para Special Forces are missing after an Army boat capsized in the Yamuna near Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district during a night training exercise on September 1. The boat, carrying five personnel, suffered a technical snag and was caught in strong currents before capsizing near the barrage’s sluice gates. Three soldiers swam to safety, while two were swept away. FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao has strongly backed Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s food safety crackdown, saying the officer has shown that effective enforcement is possible with existing manpower. Rao said food safety postings were often seen as “punishment postings” because the sector historically received less attention than healthcare. He called for dedicated food safety commissioners in every state. A 47-year-old mother from Maharashtra’s Beed district has won hearts after running barefoot in a saree to win ₹3,000 for her daughters’ education. Ramabai Ranveer, the family’s sole breadwinner and a domestic cook, finished first in the 3-km Amrut Daud marathon in Ambajogai on August 29. A viral video showed her running with her sandals in her hand. Her daughter Pooja, who encouraged her to participate, finished second. India’s 21-year-old powerlifting star Keyaa Kunal Banerji made the nation proud after lifting 140kg, more than three times her 45.70kg body weight, to win silver in the deadlift at the IPF World Sub-Junior and Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships in South Africa. Competing in the Junior Women’s 47kg category, Banerji finished fifth overall with a total of 280kg. Her remarkable performance marks another major step in her rapidly rising career. The young athlete has steadily improved her strength over the past year, turning hard work and determination into an international medal for India.  

Iran launched missile and drone attacks on US targets in Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq and Bahrain after American forces resumed strikes against Iran. Tehran’s retaliation came after Iranian authorities said a US missile strike hit a home hosting a wedding in Sirik, southern Iran, killing five people, including a child, and injuring more than 50. The US military said it was aware of the reports but insisted it never targets civilians. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of cases filed against farmers and teachers for protests during the previous DMK government’s tenure between 2021 and 2026. Vijay said the pending cases had caused difficulties for those booked for protesting against projects such as SIPCOT developments and the proposed Parandur airport. He accused the previous government of treating democratic protesters “inhumanely” and said the decision would strengthen democratic rights and public trust.
