Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” has died aged 84 while serving a life sentence in The Hague. Mladić was convicted in 2017 of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992–95 Bosnian war. He was held responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed, and for the prolonged siege of Sarajevo. After 16 years as a fugitive, he was arrested in Serbia in 2011. His death marks the end of the life of one of the conflict’s most notorious figures. (PC: AP)

Hundreds of desperate families crowded hospitals across Nepal on Thursday, searching for relatives missing after catastrophic flash floods killed at least 359 people. At Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, families carried photographs and shared names, addresses and phone numbers to identify missing loved ones. One distressed relative pleaded, “I’ll show you his photo,” reflecting the anguish of those still awaiting news. Hospitals in Kathmandu and Chitwan received bodies recovered from the Trishuli and Narayani rivers, while some mortuaries struggled with the number of victims. Aerial footage has revealed the dramatic transformation of Gyirong Port on the Nepal-China border after devastating flash floods and mudslides struck the region. Before-and-after images show the port standing intact before the disaster, while the aftermath is dominated by mud and debris. The floods severely damaged the area and disrupted a major trade route linking Nepal with Tibet. Roads connecting Gyirong Township and the port have been closed in both directions, while communications and power links were also affected. Chinese authorities reported major casualties and missing people following the mudslide. However, Hindustan Times said it could not independently verify the footage’s authenticity. 

China has warned Nepal of a possible fresh flood within three days after a barrier lake formed near the Nepal-Tibet border. The lake, created by a blockage near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, already contains around 2 million cubic metres of water. Chinese authorities estimate another 3 million cubic metres could flow into it over the next three days, increasing the risk of a breach. Nepal’s authorities have urged residents along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers to remain alert and take precautionary measures. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 32 people from the state remain missing after devastating flash floods in Nepal, while contact has been established with one person. He expressed hope that the missing individuals would return safely. Adhikari said around 150 Indians are feared missing in the disaster and confirmed that the Bengal government is coordinating with the Indian Embassy. A control room has been established at Nabanna, while Bengal and Kolkata Police have opened a helpline for families seeking information. Deepak Ahuja, 60, and his wife Madhu Ahuja, 57, an Indian-origin US couple, remain missing after devastating flash floods and mudslides struck the Nepal-Tibet region. Their daughters are anxiously awaiting information about their parents but remain hopeful that they will be found alive. The disaster has left hundreds dead and thousands missing across Nepal and neighbouring areas, while rescue teams continue searching affected locations. The National Security Guard (NSG) has launched its first Mahila Commando Conversion Course at its Training Academy in Manesar, marking a significant step in women’s participation in specialised counter-terror operations. Begun on August 24, the 12-week residential programme trains women personnel from State Police Forces and Central Armed Police Forces in physical conditioning, weapons handling, marksmanship, tactical intervention and hostage rescue. Twenty-five women from Rajasthan’s RAC 5th Battalion are among the first participants. The trainees will return to their parent forces after completing the course in November, carrying advanced skills to strengthen counter-terror preparedness and cross-agency cooperation.

The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet has crossed 350, while rescue teams continue searching for survivors and missing people. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said at least 288 Indian nationals remain uncontactable in Nepal, while around 200 others are stranded on the Chinese side of the border. The disaster, triggered by a major glacial collapse and debris flow, has destroyed roads, bridges and settlements near the Nepal-China border.
