A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and Google liable for harming a young woman through social media addiction. The woman, known as Kaley, was awarded $3 million.   Jurors said the companies built addictive platforms that hurt her mental health. Meta was held 70% responsible, while YouTube, owned by Google, was 30%.   Kaley said, “I stopped engaging with family because I was spending all my time on social media.” She began using Instagram at nine and YouTube at six.   Meta said it disagrees with the verdict and is reviewing legal options. The High Court in London has refused to reopen Nirav Modi’s extradition case. The decision may end his last legal option in the UK. This clears the way for his return to India after years in custody.   The court relied on assurances from the Indian government. It said Modi will not be questioned by five agencies. Judges called these assurances “specific” and given in “good faith”.   Modi had cited the Sanjay Bhandari case to argue risk of mistreatment. The court accepted concerns but said the assurances addressed them.   The CBI said its team was in London to support the case. Modi has been jailed in the UK since 2019. (PC: HT)

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it targeted a US F-18 fighter jet during the ongoing conflict. It shared a video that appears to show a midair strike. The footage shows a flash near the jet and possible damage. It also suggests the pilot may have ejected. Iran did not give details about the location or damage. The US military quickly denied the claim. Central Command said no US aircraft was shot down. There is no independent proof of the video. Similar claims were made earlier by Iran. The US had rejected those too. Tensions between both countries continue to rise in the region.

India strongly criticised Pakistan for backing Asiya Andrabi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment under UAPA. India said Islamabad’s remarks amounted to condoning terrorism and interfering in internal judicial matters. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal rejected Pakistan’s statement, asserting it has no locus standi and accusing it of sponsoring terrorism and spreading false narratives. Pakistan had termed Andrabi a political leader and criticised the verdict as unjust. India will discontinue LPG supply within three months for households refusing to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) where available, under a new order by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The move aims to expand pipeline infrastructure, promote fuel diversification, and free LPG for areas without connectivity amid global supply disruptions. Exceptions apply where PNG is technically infeasible with a valid NOC. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board will oversee implementation. The government clarified no changes to LPG refill rules and assured adequate supplies, urging citizens to avoid panic amid ongoing energy concerns.

Iran has rejected a US ceasefire proposal, asserting it will not be dictated to by Donald Trump and that hostilities will end only on Tehran’s terms. Officials described Washington’s plan as excessive, insisting the timeline depends solely on Iran. S Jaishankar asserted that India will not act as a “go-between” like Pakistan in mediating US–Iran tensions. The remarks came amid Islamabad’s offer to host talks, backed by Donald Trump. Sources said such mediation reflects US–Pakistan bilateral dynamics. India defended its approach, highlighting diplomatic outreach to all stakeholders and evacuation of over 4.25 lakh citizens from Iran. The government assured stable energy supplies, citing diversified imports, especially from Russia. The Bharatiya Janata Party released its third list of 19 candidates for the West Bengal assembly elections. The list includes the mother of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim. She will contest from Panihati. The state will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Counting will take place on May 4.   Speaking earlier, she said, “For women’s safety and security… I joined the BJP.” She also added, “I don’t want what happened to my daughter to ever happen to another woman.”   The BJP has now announced candidates for most of the 294 seats in the state.
