Edmund Lalrindika scored a stunning hat-trick as East Bengal defeated arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 4-1 to win the Durand Cup on Sunday. The victory ended East Bengal's 22-year wait for the trophy, their last title coming in 2004. Bipin Singh opened the scoring before Lalrindika struck three times in a dominant first-half display. Manvir Singh scored Mohun Bagan's only goal, but the Mariners failed to mount a comeback. Under coach Antonio Lopez Habas, East Bengal produced a disciplined performance to lift their 17th Durand Cup title, drawing level with Mohun Bagan in the competition's all-time title standings. India is working towards establishing its own space station, the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, by 2035, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said on Sunday. Speaking during National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, Narayanan said the first module of the proposed space station has already received approval. He also highlighted upcoming programmes, including the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission. Narayanan said India's space programme has expanded significantly over the past 64 years, with space-based technology now supporting citizens in more than 50 areas, including communication, navigation, disaster management, remote sensing, education and Earth observation.  

Manchester City and Norway star Erling Haaland has unveiled a dramatic new look, cutting off his signature long blonde hair and debuting a buzzcut. The 26-year-old shared the transformation on social media, saying it was “time to get a fresh start” as the new season begins. Haaland said he had planned to cut his hair after the 2026 World Cup but delayed the change due to a busy schedule. His girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, praised the new look, while teammates Jack Grealish and Zlatan Ibrahimović were left surprised. Haaland's long hairstyle had gone viral during the World Cup.  

US President Donald Trump said Canada wants the “benefits of being a State, without being one” after trade talks between the two countries collapsed. The breakdown triggered new 50% US tariffs on several Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the move a “miscalculation” and said Canada would respond with matching tariffs from September 8. Carney said the US had “asked too much and offered too little”. The new US tariffs will cover goods including dairy, wine, cement, clothing and hockey equipment. The trade dispute has raised fresh uncertainty over economic ties between the two neighbouring countries. (PC: BBC)

Two men have been detained over the killing of a Hindu family of four in Bangladesh’s Rangpur, police said. The suspects were allegedly taking Yaba, a potent methamphetamine-based drug, on the family’s rooftop when retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty confronted them. Police said the men then killed Ganapati, his wife and their two children. Investigators said the suspects stayed inside the house for six to seven hours after the killings. They allegedly ate dates and cucumbers, took a bath and later left. Police said evidence recovered from the house helped identify and arrest the suspects, who reportedly confessed during questioning.  

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has criticised Yashasvi Jaiswal for his heated clash with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo. The incident happened after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45. Fernando appeared to give Jaiswal a send-off as he walked back. Jaiswal then turned around and confronted the bowler. The two exchanged words, clashed heads and were involved in a brief push before Sri Lankan players separated them. Manjrekar said Jaiswal “crossed the line” and should have kept his cool. He added that the match referee should take serious note of the physical contact.  

Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das has mocked the BJP’s new Gen Z outreach programme and questioned its choice of leaders. Reacting to the newly formed team, Das wrote, “Three claps to the BJP for a marvellous set of ‘Gen Z faces’.” He also referred to earlier remarks by BJP president Nitin Nabin about young people and protesters. Das further criticised Smriti Irani, who is part of the outreach team. The BJP has formed the team to strengthen its engagement with younger voters. The programme will focus on their concerns and expectations through discussions, interactions and other activities across the country.  

The government spent a record Rs 92.35 crore on repairing, renovating and furnishing Union Ministers’ official homes in Delhi during 2025-26, an RTI reply has shown. The amount was more than three times the Rs 27.47 crore spent in 2014-15. The Central Public Works Department spent Rs 547.68 crore on these homes between 2014-15 and 2025-26. Officials said inflation and the cost of maintaining old buildings led to higher spending. Many colonial-era bungalows have seepage, termite damage, ageing electrical systems and plumbing problems. Spending was Rs 71.98 crore in 2024-25 before rising to its highest level in 2025-26. (PC: India Today)

India batter Devdutt Padikkal produced another outstanding performance against Sri Lanka, scoring 117 runs off 193 balls with 12 fours in the second Test. His century continued a remarkable run after his 167 in the opening Test at Galle. Padikkal has now broken Rahul Dravid’s record for the most runs by an Indian batter in a two-match away Test series. He also became the first visiting-team batter to score multiple centuries while batting at No. 3 in a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. Former diplomat Navdeep Suri, who represented India as ambassador to the UAE and Egypt and High Commissioner to Australia, has highlighted difficulties faced during Punjab’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Suri revealed that volunteers informed him that some of his details did not match records from 2003, creating problems in establishing his citizenship despite his long public service career. Sharing his experience on social media, Suri questioned procedural inconsistencies in the voter verification process. The incident has sparked debate over the implementation of SIR in Punjab, with concerns that ordinary citizens may encounter similar hurdles while updating or verifying their electoral records.
