The Bangladesh government has ordered an immediate ban on the telecast of the Indian Premier League across the country. The move follows a row over the removal of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for the 2026 season. In a statement, the government said it was not aware of any clear reason for the decision by the Indian board and called it painful for the people of Bangladesh. India’s Dust EXperiment, or DEX, has recorded repeated strikes from tiny space dust near Earth orbit. The 3-kg device flew on ISRO’s PSLV-C58 XPoSat mission in January 2024 and worked at about 350 km altitude. It was built by the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad. From January 1 to February 9, the instrument logged clear signals from fast dust particles formed by comet tails and asteroid crashes. Some hits were seen about once every 17 minutes. The India Meteorological Department has warned that dense fog will continue in many parts of north, central, east and northeast India for the next four to five days. Visibility has fallen below 50 metres in some areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Uttarakhand. Cold day conditions are likely in parts of Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh this week. A cold wave is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh from January 6. Light rain or snow may occur in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. A gas leak and fire broke out at an ONGC oil well in Irusumanda village of Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district on Monday. Officials said the incident happened during repair work using a workover rig after the well had stopped production. A sudden blowout released large volumes of gas mixed with crude oil, which soon caught fire. Thick smoke and gas spread across the area. Authorities used loudspeakers to warn residents in three nearby villages to avoid using power or lighting stoves. Many people moved out with their cattle. One person has been taken into custody after an incident at the Ohio residence of US Vice President JD Vance, US media reported. CNN, quoting a federal law enforcement source, said several windows were damaged and an investigation is under way. Local outlet WLWT reported broken glass at the scene, with police and the Secret Service present. Authorities said the Vance family was not at home at the time. Officials do not believe the suspect entered the house. Investigators are trying to determine whether the act was aimed at the vice president or his family. After the Supreme Court refused bail to Umar Khalid in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, his partner Banojyotsna Lahiri shared a brief exchange with him on social media. She quoted Khalid saying he felt relief for other accused who were granted bail. “I am really happy for the others who got bail,” he told her. Lahiri replied that she would visit him the next day. Khalid responded, “Good, good, aa jana. Ab yahi zindagi hai.” The court also denied bail to Sharjeel Imam but allowed five other accused to be released. An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck central Assam early Monday, officials said. The National Centre for Seismology recorded the tremor at 4.17 am in Morigaon district on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. The quake was at a depth of 50 km. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property. People in many districts across Assam felt the shaking and moved out of their homes as a safety step. The tremor was also felt in parts of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal. Areas in Bhutan, China and Bangladesh also reported mild shaking. US President Donald Trump has again said the United States should annex Greenland, calling it vital for national security. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We need Greenland,” citing defence needs and its mineral wealth. The remarks came after Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged him to stop making threats, saying the US has no right to take any part of the Danish kingdom. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen rejected the idea, calling it a fantasy and urging dialogue within international law. Speaking during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Xi said major powers must respect the paths chosen by other nations and avoid unilateral and “bullying” actions. Chinese state media said his remarks followed Beijing’s earlier objections to the US strikes in Venezuela. China has urged the United States to release Maduro and his wife and said the action violates international law and the UN Charter. Beijing has long been a close partner of Caracas.
