Glaciers in Uttarakhand's Central Himalaya are retreating by an average of 23.23 metres a year, and some are losing up to 88 metres annually, a new study has found. Khatling Glacier in Tehri Garhwal, a clean-ice glacier, showed the fastest retreat, while debris-covered glaciers such as Bhagirathi and Satopanth retreated about 3.7 metres a year. The study, based on data from 1990 to 2024, also found the equilibrium line altitude has risen by nearly 500 metres in some areas since 2000. Researchers said the findings have implications for water security in the Ganga basin, which supports around 800 million people. (PC: X)

US intelligence agencies have warned that China could gain access to F-35 fighter jet technology through Saudi Arabia, The New York Times reported. The concern centres on a proposed $24 billion sale of 48 F-35s and a spare engine, announced by President Donald Trump in November 2025. Officials fear Chinese spying or Riyadh's military ties with Beijing could expose sensitive technology. Analysts questioned whether Saudi Arabia would remove Huawei and ZTE equipment from defence sites. The State Department sent the deal to Congress in June. Saudi Arabia has also announced a find of 110 million tonnes of uranium-bearing ore in Madinah. (PC: India Today)
