A 24-year-old Indian national has become the first person to be charged under the UK's new border security law for advertising illegal immigration services online.   Hem Raj, who lives in the West Midlands, was arrested in Smethwick on Tuesday and appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said his arrest followed social media posts allegedly offering advice on fraudulent visa and asylum applications.   Raj is charged under Section 17 of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025. He is also charged with illegally providing immigration advice under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. (PC: Economic Times)

US President Donald Trump has extended the $100,000 fee on employers hiring certain H-1B workers for another year. The White House said on Friday that the rule will stay until September 21, 2027, with limited exceptions for cases in the national interest.  The fee applies to certain workers applying from outside the US. It does not apply to people already in the country, or to renewals. The White House said the step has reduced reliance on lower-paid foreign labour.  The rule is in court. A federal judge struck down the government's guidance in June, and the administration has appealed. Indian applicants face continued uncertainty. (PC: The Indian Express)

India has sent a nearly 500-member team to the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, hoping to beat its 106 medals from Hangzhou, including 28 golds.   Kabaddi is India's surest bet, with both men's and women's teams as defending champions. The men's and women's cricket teams are also expected to win gold again. The men's hockey team is the favourite, while the women hope to win gold for the first time in 44 years.   Other top hopes include archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Dhiraj Bommadevara, shooters Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker, badminton pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and high jumper Sarvesh Kushare. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen has won the vice-president post in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election 2026, defeating candidates backed by ABVP and NSUI.   Shokeen secured 30,615 votes and beat ABVP's Ishu Maurya, who got 16,910, by 13,705 votes. NSUI's Vir Chatrath received 4,313 votes.   A student of Buddhist Studies at DU, Shokeen comes from Peeragarhi village in Delhi. His father is a bus conductor and his mother an anganwadi worker. He had sought an NSUI ticket but was asked to withdraw his nomination. He refused and contested independently, campaigning on student safety and accommodation. He now holds one of DUSU's four key posts. (PC: India Today)

Google's AI model Gemini autonomously hacked into three companies during a cyber-security test in May, the company has confirmed. It is thought to be the first known case of the model carrying out such an act.   A Google official said Gemini found public information online and guessed credentials to access websites it believed were part of the test. In each case, the model stopped.   The affected companies have been informed. Heather Adkins, Google's vice president of Security Engineering, said the independent testing firm has since changed its testing processes. The hacks were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.   Similar incidents were reported in July, when Anthropic's Claude hacked three organisations and OpenAI said its models carried out cyber-attacks on publicly available services. The Government of India said on Saturday it will act in its own interest and is not under external pressure, after US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law.  The law lets the US President impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, but does not automatically impose them on any country.  Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh called such tariffs unfair and said energy is a primary concern for India. A new study has found that glaciers in Uttarakhand are shrinking quickly, mostly because of global warming and changing weather. Khatling glacier is retreating fastest, at about 88 metres a year. Milam is pulling back by up to 37.8 metres annually, and Gangotri is shrinking by 22.02 metres each year. These glaciers feed major rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna, so rapid melt could seriously affect water for irrigation, drinking and hydropower projects in India and neighbouring countries. The findings add to growing concern over the fragile Himalayas. (PC: X)

Thick black smoke and flames were seen near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday, causing major flight disruptions. Flight tracker Flightradar24 rated the airport 5.0, its highest disruption level, citing long delays and several cancellations.   The incident followed an overnight air raid alert from Saudi civil defence. Residents in Riyadh and Al-Kharj were told to stay indoors because of a "hostile aerial threat." An all-clear was issued on Saturday morning. It was the first such alert since fighting in neighbouring Yemen intensified this month.   Saudi authorities have not yet commented on the cause of the smoke. The United States and Denmark have agreed on a new security arrangement involving Greenland after months of tensions over President Donald Trump’s calls for greater US control of the Arctic territory. Trump said the pact would give the US permanent control over Greenland’s security and allow Washington to develop a larger military presence. However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement recognizes Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. The deal is expected to be formally signed during the UN General Assembly in New York next week and will require parliamentary approval. (PC: Getty Images)

The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Election 2026 results were declared on September 19 after 20 rounds of counting. ABVP won three of the four central posts—President, Secretary and Joint Secretary. Yash Dabas secured the President post with 24,576 votes, defeating NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena, who received 22,523 votes. Riya Chhawdi won Secretary with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh became Joint Secretary with 16,615 votes. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member, won the Vice-President post with 30,615 votes, defeating ABVP’s Ishu Maurya.
