Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said a building next to the collapsed Satya Niketan PG will be demolished on Wednesday. The building has been declared unsafe. At least seven people died and several were injured in the collapse. Gupta visited injured students at AIIMS and said the government will pay their full treatment costs. Police said repair and construction work was underway in the basement before the collapse. They are searching for the contractor involved. Police also said four floors of the building were illegally built, according to the FIR. The PG owner, his wife and son are in custody.  

Deaths linked to second-hand smoke in India have increased by nearly 50% since 1990, according to a new study published in The Lancet Public Health. The study estimated that 325,600 people died from illnesses linked to passive smoking in 2023. About 444 million Indians were exposed to second-hand smoke that year. Passive smoking is linked to serious diseases, including heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and COPD. Children are especially at risk. Researchers said smoke-free homes, workplaces and public places can help reduce exposure. They also called for greater awareness, stronger tobacco controls and better support to help people quit smoking.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday criticised the previous UPA government over delays in completing the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). Speaking at a ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event in Vadodara, Modi said the project remained stuck in bureaucratic processes for years. He said his government helped speed up its implementation. The 2,800-km freight corridor has now been completed, marking a major milestone for India’s transport network. Modi said better connectivity is important for a developed India. He called the project a major achievement for 21st-century India. The corridor is expected to improve freight movement and strengthen the country’s infrastructure.  

Houthi rebels launched missile and drone attacks on several Saudi cities near the Yemen border. The attacks reportedly injured 73 people, including women and children. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said missiles and drones targeted key sites overnight. Targets included Aramco facilities in Abha, Najran and Jizan. A Saudi airbase in Khamis Mushait was also targeted. Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the attacks. Its foreign ministry said the country would not tolerate attacks on its territory or assets. It warned of “consequences” and said Saudi Arabia has the right to defend its people and national assets. The ministry also called for an immediate end to the escalation. (PC: Reuters)

Former India cricketer Ashish Nehra has said he is not interested in becoming Team India’s head coach. Speaking at a Cricket Association of Bengal event, Nehra said coaching the national team would be an “honour” and “privilege”. However, he said he is happy with his current role. “I never plan things like that,” Nehra said. He also joked that he would first ask his wife if he received an offer because the job involves eight to nine months of travel. Nehra has enjoyed success with Gujarat Titans. He guided them to the IPL title in 2022 and later to more strong seasons.  

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to urgently hear a plea seeking more hostels for Delhi University students. The petition asked DU to provide hostels at every college. The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia. The lawyer sought an urgent hearing on Tuesday. The court said a PIL on the same issue had already been filed and would be heard the next day. “One PIL has already been filed. Tomorrow it will come. Unnecessarily you waste your own time,” the bench said. The court also questioned whether an interim order could be passed.  

Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has resigned after corruption allegations linked to illegal call centres. Anti-corruption investigators searched his offices over the weekend. They said an official in his office led a money-laundering scheme. The network allegedly took payments to protect scam call centres and laundered millions. Investigators said the money was used to buy property, jewellery and other valuables. Kravchenko denied wrongdoing and called the allegations unsubstantiated. He resigned a day later, saying he did not want his position used for political conflict. The scandal comes as corruption remains a major issue for Ukraine and its European Union ambitions. India recorded 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026-27. However, economists Surjit Bhalla and Montek Singh Ahluwalia said this growth is not enough to make India a developed country by 2047. Bhalla said India needs sustained double-digit growth, especially in dollar terms. Ahluwalia also said the country needs a much higher growth rate. He warned that growth is not reaching all sections equally. Both economists stressed the need for more jobs and economic reforms. They also called for greater global trade and lower tariffs. They said strong growth must continue for many years to achieve the Viksit Bharat goal.  

Investigators have recovered the flight recorders from an Amazon cargo plane that crashed at Miami International Airport. Five people were killed and five others were seriously injured in the crash on Sunday. The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air, overshot the runway while landing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. It hit airport equipment, a white van and a Toyota Corolla before stopping beyond the runway. Investigators said it is too early to know what caused the crash. They will study the plane’s systems, engines, flight data, crew training and weather. Two runways remain closed. (PC: Reuters)

An Indian woman working in a laboratory in South Korea shared her first Korean wedding experience online, highlighting a custom that surprised her. She and two colleagues attended their Korean labmate’s wedding but initially went for coffee, later joining the ceremony. Afterward, security guards stopped them from entering the lunch hall because they lacked a token. Unable to communicate in English or Korean, they contacted their labmate, who explained that guests must first hand over their gift or money envelope at a reception counter. They receive a token in return, allowing entry to the dining area. The woman found the process very different from Indian weddings and called it “very strange”.
