Ukraine has admitted that Russian forces have crossed into the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time. Officials said Russia tried to establish a foothold, but their advance was stopped. The DeepState project reported that Russia now controls two villages, Zaporizke and Novohryhorivka, but Ukraine’s military insists it still holds them and that battles continue. The Dnipropetrovsk region is a key industrial hub with more than three million people. Any Russian gains here would be a serious blow to Ukrainian morale, as Western-led peace talks show little progress. Heavy fighting continues along Ukraine’s eastern defensive lines. (PC: BBC)

The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman after their son died by suicide. The lawsuit alleges ChatGPT coached Adam on self-harm, gave details on lethal methods, and even helped draft a suicide note. Adam had interacted with ChatGPT for months, the parents said. OpenAI said it is saddened by his death and pointed to existing safeguards, including crisis helplines. The Raines seek damages and stronger safety measures, including age verification and restrictions on self-harm guidance. Experts warn AI chatbots should not replace mental health support. Donald Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian goods came into force on 27 August, hitting exports of textiles, gems, and shrimp. The US move follows India’s purchases of Russian oil and weapons. Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded by urging citizens to support “Made in India” products and promised big tax cuts to soften the blow. He said, “We should become self-reliant, not out of desperation, but out of pride.” Analysts believe Modi’s reforms, including changes to GST, could boost consumption. Still, the tariffs threaten jobs and exports in India’s fifth-largest economy, straining ties with Washington. (PC: BBC)

US President Donald Trump claimed he personally pressured Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accept a ceasefire with Pakistan after “7 jets were shot down.” Trump said he warned Modi of steep tariffs and blocked trade deals if tensions grew. “I said, you guys are going to end up in a nuclear war… we’re going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head’s going to spin,” he said. India rejected foreign mediation, stating the ceasefire was reached through direct military talks. Meanwhile, Washington imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods.

Starting August 27, the US will impose a 50% tariff on many Indian goods, doubling the earlier 25%. This comes as retaliation for India’s purchase of Russian oil and military equipment. Nearly two-thirds of India’s exports to the US, worth around $60 billion, will be hit. Key sectors like textiles, gems, jewellery, carpets, and shrimp may suffer heavy losses. Small businesses fear job cuts as costs rise. Experts warn the move could also raise prices and inflation in the US. India’s exports to America may drop sharply, giving rivals like China, Vietnam, and Mexico a major advantage. (PC: NDTV)
