6 people died after part of a ground-plus-three-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area on Sunday night during heavy rainfall. The incident happened around 8.30 pm at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir. According to officials, two to three tenements gave way, and more people are feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, BMC and ambulance services are searching the site. "Rescue operations are continuing," officials said. Satellite images from ISRO’s INSAT-3DR have captured two massive monsoon systems driving intense rainfall over Maharashtra and West Bengal. One sprawling convective cloud mass stretches from the east-central Arabian Sea into the Konkan coast, while another powerful system covers the northern Bay of Bengal, extending across Gangetic West Bengal, Bangladesh and adjoining northeastern states. Infrared imagery shows extremely cold, bright white cloud tops, signalling deep convection and vigorous thunderstorm activity capable of producing heavy rainfall. The twin weather systems have significantly strengthened the southwest monsoon, increasing rainfall across large parts of India. A powerful heatwave forced the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on Washington, DC’s National Mall as Fourth of July celebrations got underway. More than 165 million people across the US East Coast and Midwest were under extreme heat warnings, with temperatures reaching up to 41°C in cities including Washington and Philadelphia. A 44-year-old security guard, Hernán Alberto Gil, was rescued alive after spending more than eight days trapped beneath the collapsed Galerías Playa Grande shopping centre in Venezuela's La Guaira state.
