The arrival of El Nino has raised concerns over India's monsoon, as the weather phenomenon is often linked to lower rainfall, hotter temperatures and a higher risk of drought. However, scientists say another climate pattern, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), could reduce its impact.   A positive IOD develops when the western Indian Ocean becomes warmer than the eastern part, helping push more moisture towards the Indian subcontinent and increasing the chances of rainfall. In the past, including during the strong 1997 El Nino, a positive IOD helped support the monsoon.   Experts, however, say it is still too early to know whether a positive IOD will develop this year. The UK could experience a second heatwave within weeks as temperatures are expected to rise sharply this weekend, according to the Met Office. Forecasters said parts of southern and southeastern England could see temperatures reach or exceed 30C.   The warm spell comes shortly after record-breaking heat in late May, when temperatures climbed above 35C in some areas. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled with rain and showers until Friday before high pressure brings warmer and sunnier weather.   The Met Office said there is a possibility that heatwave conditions could return if the hot weather continues into next week. Strong dust storms swept across Delhi and the NCR on Tuesday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts. The weather department forecast moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in several parts of the national capital.   The IMD said a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to bring rainfall to Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan between June 10 and 14. Thunder squalls with wind speeds of up to 60 kmph and lightning are also expected.   Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced into North Bengal and the northeastern states, with heavy rainfall forecast in several districts till June 13.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Philippines has killed at least 37 people and injured 487 others, while hundreds of aftershocks continue to shake the region. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue teams reach badly affected areas on Mindanao island.   Thousands of homes and schools have been damaged, with landslides and collapsed roads hampering relief operations. The quake also triggered tsunami warnings in parts of Japan and Indonesia. 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of western Cuba late on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred about 118 kilometres west-northwest of Mantua at a depth of 33 kilometres. Tremors were also felt across parts of Southwest Florida. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or major damage. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and assess any possible impact. The quake comes just hours after a powerful earthquake in the Philippines caused widespread damage and loss of life.

Delhi is expected to witness another hot day on Monday, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 42 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather department has forecast clear skies and a minimum temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the city's maximum temperature settled at 41.6 degrees Celsius, above the seasonal average. A fresh heat spell is expected across parts of north and central India, with temperatures likely to peak around June 10 and 11.
