An 18-month-old elephant calf named Maya has been airlifted from Kerala to Vantara, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, for specialised medical treatment. The calf, rescued after being abandoned in April 2025, suffers from a genetic bone disorder called osteopenia, which weakened her bones. Her condition deteriorated following a fall that left her unable to stand, prompting a medical board to recommend euthanasia. However, Vantara offered a six-month treatment programme involving advanced veterinary care, including hormone therapy and hydrotherapy. The centre will cover all treatment expenses, while Kerala officials hope for her recovery. 

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that BJP supporters attacked his Kolkata residence around 2 am on November 7. Sharing videos on social media, he claimed the incident followed two days of surveillance and described it as the seventh attempt on his life in six months. He criticised Kolkata Police for failing to prevent the alleged attack and accused the judiciary of remaining silent despite repeated threats. The Election Commission of India has given voters excluded from draft electoral rolls during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) another opportunity to seek inclusion in the final lists across seven states: Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Nagaland. Electors marked absent, shifted, dead or duplicate can resubmit enumeration forms without filing Form 6. The Commission has directed officials to display fresh booth-wise lists and contact excluded voters through Booth Level Officers, including house visits, calls and digital communication. Applicants must provide declarations and relevant address proof where required. Accepted voters will retain their previous EPIC numbers. Those who have already submitted Form 6 need not apply again. India’s retail inflation is expected to have accelerated in October, moving closer to the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6%, according to a Reuters poll of economists. The projected increase is largely attributed to rising food prices, with food inflation estimated at 8.20%. Higher global food prices and input costs are adding to pressure on household budgets. The RBI’s inflation target range is 2% to 6%, while its forecast for average inflation during the current financial year stands at 5.2%. The anticipated rise could influence the central bank’s monetary policy decisions, as policymakers assess price pressures and the outlook for inflation in the coming months. (PC: X)

The Supreme Court on November 6 issued contempt notices to office-bearers of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) over a controversial social media post targeting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M Pancholi stressed that the Constitution is supreme and judicial independence cannot be compromised. The court stated that freedom of expression cannot justify intimidation or interference with justice, warning that attempts to undermine judicial authority must be dealt with firmly. The Congress party deleted the post and issued an unconditional apology, claiming it was published without leadership approval. (PC: ANI)

The Union Home Ministry has amended immigration rules, making it mandatory for members of six non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to obtain an appropriate visa to continue staying in India. The provision covers Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who entered India by December 31, 2024, citing religious persecution, without valid travel documents or whose documents have expired. The amendment, notified on November 4, 2026, retains their exemption from passport and visa requirements for entry but introduces a separate visa requirement for continued residence. The change also aligns immigration provisions with existing citizenship rules. 

A shocking mass murder case has emerged in Bengaluru, where a cab driver identified as Indushekhar allegedly killed seven members of his wife’s family, including his wife Sunitha and a seven-year-old boy. Police suspect the murders were motivated by longstanding marital disputes over his wife’s visits to her parental home. The accused allegedly lured family members to his residence in Rajajinagar and killed them using a grinding stone over two days. He reportedly transported and dumped their bodies at different locations. The case surfaced after a missing-person complaint. Police have recovered one body, arrested the accused and are searching for the remaining six. (PC: ITG)

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has agreed to acquire 100% ownership of Netherlands-based EVOS B.V. in an all-cash deal valued at €2.56 billion (approximately ₹27,200 crore). The acquisition will give India's largest private port operator control of eight liquid storage terminals across the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Malta. EVOS, Europe's second-largest independent liquid storage operator, has a storage capacity of 6.3 million cubic metres. The deal will strengthen Adani's international operations, expand its energy logistics portfolio and provide exposure to emerging fuels, including biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel. The Allahabad High Court on November 5, 2026, dismissed a petition seeking an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks about the Sikh community during his 2024 US visit. Gandhi had questioned whether Sikhs in India felt safe wearing turbans and visiting gurdwaras. The petitioners claimed his comments could encourage separatist activities and threaten national unity. However, Justice Vikram D. Chauhan observed that elected representatives have the right to raise minority concerns under Article 19 of the Constitution.
