The Bombay High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the 2020 death of Disha Salian, former manager of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Salian died after falling from a building in Mumbai on June 8, 2020, days before Rajput’s death. Her father had sought a fresh investigation, alleging serious doubts about the circumstances of her death. The court has directed the CBI to register an FIR and conduct a comprehensive probe, while stressing that no individual should be treated as an accused without sufficient evidence. The case has remained surrounded by public and political speculation. 

Retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra has been appointed the first full-time Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Mishra, who headed the Indian Air Force’s Western Air Command and was associated with Operation Sindoor, brings extensive experience in leadership, strategic planning and administration. He was selected from a shortlist of three candidates after 5,585 applications were received for the post. The appointment is part of efforts to strengthen the temple trust’s administrative structure and professionalise its operations. The Rajasthan government has begun rebuilding a government school in Rampura village in Jaipur’s Bagru Assembly constituency after the Cockroach Janata Party protested over its poor condition on August 21. The old, dilapidated building was demolished on Wednesday to make way for a new structure, with around ₹18 lakh sanctioned for the project. CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka called the move a victory for students, saying children had been studying in extremely poor conditions. Ranka said Rampura reflected wider infrastructure problems in Rajasthan’s government schools and vowed to continue raising the issue until students receive safe, dignified learning environments. Two soldiers from 1 Para Special Forces are missing after an Army boat capsized in the Yamuna near Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district during a night training exercise on September 1. The boat, carrying five personnel, suffered a technical snag and was caught in strong currents before capsizing near the barrage’s sluice gates. Three soldiers swam to safety, while two were swept away. A joint rescue operation involving the Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, police and civil authorities is underway, with water discharge reduced to support the search.   (PC: HT)

FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao has strongly backed Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s food safety crackdown, saying the officer has shown that effective enforcement is possible with existing manpower. Rao said food safety postings were often seen as “punishment postings” because the sector historically received less attention than healthcare. He called for dedicated food safety commissioners in every state. His remarks come as Mundhe faces criticism over his enforcement measures, with the Bombay High Court recently questioning the FDA’s approach as disproportionate and alleging undue haste in shutting establishments and revoking licences. A 47-year-old mother from Maharashtra’s Beed district has won hearts after running barefoot in a saree to win ₹3,000 for her daughters’ education. Ramabai Ranveer, the family’s sole breadwinner and a domestic cook, finished first in the 3-km Amrut Daud marathon in Ambajogai on August 29. A viral video showed her running with her sandals in her hand. Her daughter Pooja, who encouraged her to participate, finished second. Ranveer said she planned to use the prize money to buy books and meet her daughters’ needs. One daughter is pursuing a B.Sc., while Pooja is preparing for police recruitment. (PC: The Hindu)

The Bihar government has issued a public health advisory after unusual and unidentified fish were reportedly carried into the state by floodwaters from Nepal. The fish have been spotted in the Gandak River basin, particularly in West Champaran and Gopalganj. Authorities have advised residents not to catch, buy, sell or consume these unfamiliar fish until their species and safety are properly verified. Officials are concerned about possible bacterial, viral and fungal contamination, while spoiled fish could also cause foodborne illnesses such as vomiting and diarrhoea. The advisory aims to protect public health as authorities assess the fish brought by the floodwaters. 

The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed FIRs registered across India against students and youths who participated in the July protests over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in the 2026 NEET examination. Using its powers under Article 142, the court said peaceful participation in a protest should not be treated as a criminal offence. It ordered that no fresh FIRs be filed over the July 20-25 protests. However, the court allowed police to separately examine the roles of 2,837 people with serious criminal antecedents. Following the order, the protest group withdrew its planned September 5 march in Delhi. (PC: HT)

A security breach has been reported at the Madras Regiment premises in Hyderabad’s Cantonment area after Army authorities discovered weapons and ammunition missing from a secured storage facility. Preliminary information indicates that four AK-47 rifles, six pistols and one INSAS rifle are among the missing arms, while ammunition has also reportedly disappeared. Army officials detected the loss on Sunday night and lodged a complaint with Bollaram Police on Monday. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the theft. Authorities are expected to examine access records, CCTV footage and other available evidence to determine how the breach occurred and whether anyone with authorised access may have been involved. India’s gross GST revenue rose 14.8% year-on-year to ₹1,99,853 crore in August 2026, according to provisional data, although collections were lower than July’s ₹2.11 lakh crore. Revenue from domestic transactions increased 9.3% to more than ₹1.37 lakh crore, while import-related GST jumped 29% to ₹62,604 crore. Net GST collections stood at ₹1.68 lakh crore, registering 8.3% annual growth. CGST contributed ₹38,413 crore, SGST ₹46,316 crore and IGST ₹1.15 lakh crore. Experts said the figures indicate resilience in the Indian economy, supported by consumption and improving compliance. They also highlighted stronger collections across several northeastern and smaller regions, while expecting festive-season spending to support higher revenues in coming months. (PC: iStock)
