The Supreme Court has refused to impose restrictions on the CJP’s proposed September 5 march in Delhi, saying there were no “compelling circumstances” to assume the protest would turn violent. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said authorities were expected to maintain law and order and could decide whether to permit the march and under what conditions. Sonam Wangchuk has said leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) considered ending their Jantar Mantar protest after the July 20 police crackdown left the movement’s leadership demoralised. Speaking on Prakhar Gupta’s PGX podcast, Wangchuk said the organisers felt the protest had collapsed after the stage was dismantled and protesters dispersed. They even asked him to prepare a message urging demonstrators to return home and rest. However, young protesters returned the next day despite the police action, restoring the leaders’ confidence. A 16-year-old Class 11 student has alleged that she was raped by a bus driver and conductor inside a moving sleeper bus in Delhi-NCR after they offered her a lift to Noida. The incident allegedly occurred on August 4 during the bus’s 47-km journey from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Kashmere Gate in Delhi. Police have arrested both accused, identified as Kuldeep and Sandeep, and seized the bus for forensic examination. The girl approached police after being dropped near Kashmere Gate. Investigators said the bus was empty and its curtained sleeper section prevented people outside from seeing inside. (PC: India Today)

India is monitoring 195 glacial lakes considered vulnerable to sudden flooding, but Nepal’s recent deadly glacier collapse has highlighted another risk that is only beginning to be mapped. A May 2026 IISc study identified 219 hanging glaciers in Uttarakhand’s Alaknanda basin, some above busy pilgrimage routes. Collapse simulations showed potential flow heights of up to 51 metres near Badrinath. India has expanded glacier-lake monitoring after the 2023 Sikkim disaster, while mitigation includes reducing lake water levels and testing warning systems. A fresh video featuring the teenager at the centre of a controversy over alleged abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi has triggered a new political storm. In the clip, the girl allegedly says Modi has “made my life hell”, claims she was hounded after her earlier viral video and says she will not “back down”. AAP and Congress shared the recording, alleging she was threatened and forced to apologise. Her lawyer, Anil Singh, said the video is not AI-generated but did not confirm the girl’s identity. The Tribune could not independently verify when or where it was recorded. The teenager’s earlier Jantar Mantar video led to a Zero FIR, followed by an apology and Modi’s appeal for forgiveness.

Indian Army Aviation pilots carried out a daring high-altitude helicopter rescue at 18,600 feet near the Nun Kun massif in Ladakh’s Kargil district. The pilots undertook a high-casualty evacuation in the rugged Zanskar range, operating in extremely challenging Himalayan conditions. The operation demanded exceptional flying skills as helicopters face severe performance limitations at such altitudes due to thin air and difficult terrain. The Indian Army said the successful mission showcased the courage and professionalism of its aviation crews and their ability to carry out critical rescue operations in some of the world’s most demanding environments.  

Economist Sanjeev Sanyal has blamed decades of economic decline and hostility to industry for Kolkata losing its once-prominent position in India’s technology sector. Speaking on a podcast, the PM-EAC member recalled that a strike was held in Kolkata when IBM brought large mainframe computers to the city. “One can say that the true founder of Bengaluru’s IT hub is actually Jyoti Basu,” Sanyal said, arguing that talent subsequently moved to Bengaluru. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said he wished an Isha Foundation Kailash pilgrimage group had reached the Gyirong immigration centre “half an hour later” as 77 pilgrims remain unaccounted for after a devastating flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border. Speaking in Kathmandu, he said the group arrived at the centre at 9:05 am, following its usual practice of reaching early to avoid long delays. The building was later washed away. The missing group includes pilgrims from 19 countries. With communications and roads disrupted, rescue teams are searching the disaster-hit region as families wait anxiously for information. At least seven unidentified bodies have been recovered from the Gandak (Narayani) River in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts following devastating floods in Nepal. In Maharajganj, three women and a man were found in the Telphal area and retrieved by Sashastra Seema Bal personnel during river surveillance operations. In Kushinagar, villagers spotted three more bodies—two women and a man—near the Chhitauni embankment. Police, SDRF and local officials recovered the remains and transferred them to mortuaries. Authorities are working to establish the identities of the victims, who are suspected to have been swept downstream from Nepal. (PC: X)

Sonam Wangchuk has joked that Aamir Khan may have suffered “short-term memory loss” like his Ghajini character after the actor denied knowing him when 3 Idiots was made. Wangchuk said videos show Khan watching him deliver a speech at an award function, where the two also met and discussed ideas. However, Wangchuk clarified that 3 Idiots was not based on his life and he has never claimed it was his biography.
