The Bombay High Court on Saturday sharply pulled up the Tukaram Mundhe-led Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration, questioning whether officials felt they were “a lord” who could do anything. The court criticised the FDA for showing “undue haste” and taking a “high-handed” approach in separate actions against Cipla Pharma and five restaurants at the Mumbai Cricket Association premises. The FDA agreed to withdraw both orders after the court said they violated principles of natural justice and warned of contempt action. The court allowed the MCA eateries to reopen, saying they were largely compliant with food safety rules, and asked the regulator to take a more pragmatic approach. (PC: NDTV)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activist Gurpreet Singh Gopi was shot dead in Mamdot, near Ferozepur, Punjab, after unidentified armed men allegedly chased the motorcycle he was travelling on and opened fire. His associate Harpreet also sustained bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment. Police said the attackers also fired at another vehicle following Gopi, but its occupants escaped unharmed. Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said an old dispute between the two parties appears to be the primary motive, while an election-related dispute is also being investigated. Police have identified the alleged attackers and launched raids to arrest them. (PC: HT)

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has assured that 33,000 fans who purchased tickets for Lionel Messi’s chaotic appearance at Kolkata’s Yuva Bharati Stadium will receive refunds from the state’s sports budget. The tickets reportedly cost ₹4,000 and ₹6,000, while the refund demand had remained unresolved since the December 13, 2025 event. Messi’s brief appearance was followed by crowd disorder, protests and vandalism at the stadium. Adhikari said the refund process has already been initiated internally. He also announced a ₹400-crore sports budget and plans to develop mini indoor stadiums across West Bengal. 

Punjab-based social media influencer Manjeet Kaur, 28, died on August 26 at PGIMER Chandigarh, nearly two months after she was allegedly abducted and brutally attacked. According to a complaint filed by her mother, Kaur was allegedly lured to meet two acquaintances near a Chandigarh liquor shop on July 3, forced into a car and taken to Morinda. The accused allegedly assaulted her, tied her to a tree and set her on fire. She briefly regained consciousness in August and reportedly described the incident to her family. Police have registered a murder and kidnapping case and are searching for the two accused. (PC: NDTV)

Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra has accused Mukesh Ambani of using Reliance-linked media outlets to spread “wrong propaganda” about his personal insolvency proceedings, an allegation Reliance has strongly rejected as “baseless”. In a video message, Chandra questioned reports highlighting Rs 22,006 crore in admitted claims against him, saying the amount relates to personal guarantees for Essel Group loans and not money he personally borrowed. He also revisited the Zee-Invesco dispute and Reliance’s past interest in Zee. Reliance said its media brands have never been used to attack anyone and expressed high regard for Chandra. An 11-member Indian technical team surveyed flood-hit hydropower tunnels in Nepal on Saturday to help speed up the rescue of workers feared trapped inside. The team, including doctors, paramedics and tunnel engineers, inspected the affected Trishuli area after an aerial survey of the Chilime and Langtang regions. Nepalese security forces have rescued 191 workers from tunnels at various hydropower projects, but several people remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations have been hampered by mud, debris and bad weather. Nepal has also sought foreign expertise for DNA testing and help rebuilding bridges damaged in the devastating flash floods. India’s food safety regulator FSSAI has proposed red hexagonal warning labels on packaged foods and drinks high in sugar, salt or saturated fat. The labels could carry clear warnings such as “High Sugar”, “High Salt” or “High Fat” on the front of the pack. The proposal was submitted to the Supreme Court after the court raised concerns over delays in introducing clearer nutrition warnings. The new system could cover products such as chips, sugary drinks and other processed foods. However, no final notification or timeline for implementation has yet been announced. (PC: X)

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has temporarily banned the sale of compounded hing made by Everest Food Products and Laljee Godhoo after laboratory tests found the products substandard. FSSAI said the samples did not meet the required 5% alcohol-soluble extract level, while some contained only 0–3%. The regulator also found excessive starch in raw hing samples from Laljee Godhoo. Everest’s egg curry masala, chicken masala and garam masala were also found non-compliant but have not been banned. The companies have been asked to explain the violations and voluntarily recall affected products. (PC: India Today)

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari criticised the raising of “Azadi” slogans at Jadavpur University, saying it was painful to hear such slogans in Kolkata. He questioned slogans including “Kashmir Mange Azadi” and references to Maoist leader Kishanji reportedly written on the university’s walls. Adhikari also expressed concern over what he described as a culture of political intimidation on the campus and called for stronger action to restore discipline and nationalism.
