The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday allowed authorities to kill rabid and aggressive stray dogs under legally permitted procedures, citing growing concerns over public safety. A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath said rising dog bite incidents, especially involving children and elderly people, could not be ignored. The court refused to modify its earlier order directing authorities to remove stray dogs from public spaces such as hospitals, parks and railway stations. The top court also criticised state governments for poor implementation of earlier directions and said authorities must act according to Animal Birth Control rules and other legal protocols. Passengers onboard an IndiGo flight from Vadodara to Delhi faced a stressful delay after a technical snag caused a 30-minute power outage inside the aircraft before take-off. Flight 6E 657, carrying around 160 passengers, lost electricity and air conditioning after the ground power unit malfunctioned on Sunday night. Passengers remained seated in complete darkness as engineers worked to restore power. The flight, scheduled to depart at 8.40 pm, finally took off around 10 pm. IndiGo later said the issue was resolved quickly and apologised for the inconvenience, adding that passenger safety and comfort remained its top priority.

Days after taking power in West Bengal, the BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched large-scale anti-encroachment and demolition drives across Kolkata and nearby areas. Bulldozers removed illegal stalls, hawkers and unauthorised structures around Howrah and Sealdah railway stations, affecting hundreds of vendors. Authorities also demolished parts of an allegedly illegal multi-storey building in Howrah built beyond approved limits. BJP minister Dilip Ghosh said the action was only the beginning and warned similar drives would continue across Bengal. Fresh claims have emerged in the death case of former model and actor Twisha Sharma, who was found hanging at her husband’s Bhopal home on May 12. Addressing a press conference, Twisha’s mother-in-law Giribala Singh alleged that her parents “pushed her into the glamour world” and later “disowned” her. She also claimed Twisha was undergoing psychiatric treatment and battling substance abuse issues.   Twisha’s father, however, accused her husband and in-laws of dowry-related harassment and emotional abuse after marriage. The Supreme Court on Tuesday reaffirmed its November 2025 order directing authorities to remove stray dogs from public institutions, transport hubs and other crowded public spaces. The court said stray dogs should be relocated to shelters and, if necessary, euthanised in cases involving rabid, incurably ill or dangerously aggressive animals.   A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath said the government cannot remain a “passive spectator” as dog bite incidents rise across the country. The court highlighted attacks on children, senior citizens and tourists, stressing that public safety is the state’s responsibility. The Ministry of Home Affairs has tightened citizenship application rules under the Citizenship Amendment Act framework by requiring applicants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to provide complete passport details and formally surrender those documents after receiving Indian citizenship approval. Under the amended Citizenship Rules, 2009, applicants must now declare whether they possess valid or expired passports from their native countries and submit issuance-related information where applicable. The new rules also mandate an undertaking to surrender such passports within 15 days of citizenship approval. The move signals stricter documentation scrutiny as the Centre strengthens procedural compliance under India’s citizenship framework. (PC: X)

India has raised petrol and diesel prices for the second time within days as global crude oil markets remain volatile amid escalating West Asia tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Petrol prices in Delhi increased by 87 paise per litre while diesel rose by 91 paise, with Kolkata recording the sharpest jump among metro cities. Brent crude prices crossing the $100-per-barrel mark have intensified pressure on domestic fuel costs. The latest hike follows an earlier ₹3-per-litre increase last week and also comes alongside rising CNG prices in Delhi-NCR. The death of 33-year-old former model and actor Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has taken a dramatic turn after her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, alleged that Twisha consumed marijuana during pregnancy and underwent psychiatric treatment. Twisha was found hanging at her matrimonial home on May 12, prompting police to register dowry harassment and murder charges against husband Samarth Singh and his mother. While Giribala Singh accused Twisha’s parents of exploiting and abandoning her, Twisha’s father alleged sustained mental harassment, indirect dowry pressure and emotional abuse after marriage. Fresh CCTV footage has intensified the investigation into the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal. The visuals allegedly show Twisha heading towards the rooftop of her home before her husband Samarth Singh and two others later carried her body downstairs. Police said the preliminary post-mortem report indicated death by hanging.   Twisha’s family has accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and murder, while the accused side has denied the allegations. WhatsApp chats accessed by media reportedly showed Twisha telling her mother that her “life had become hell”. Samarth Singh remains absconding as a Special Investigation Team continues the probe.

The CBI has arrested 10 people so far in the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case, including coaching operators, teachers and middlemen allegedly linked to a nationwide network. The latest arrest was of Shivraj Raghunath Motegaonkar from Maharashtra’s Latur, accused of possessing the leaked question paper before the May 3 examination.   Investigators earlier identified retired lecturer PV Kulkarni and teacher Manisha Gurunath Mandhare as key accused in the alleged leak operation. The probe has uncovered links spanning Maharashtra, Haryana and Rajasthan, with allegations of question papers being shared electronically and sold for large sums of money. (PC: HT)
