The Anantnag encounter in Jammu and Kashmir entered its third day. One more soldier who went missing during the encounter has been found dead, taking the death toll to four. The other three killed earlier were Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonak, and DSP Humayun Bhat. Security forces are using drones, grenade launchers and mortar shells to target the hiding terrorists. The encounter started on Wednesday between security personnel and terrorists in Kokernag area. The young son of Colonel Manpreet Singh, killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Kashmir, solemnly saluted his father's body as it arrived home in Punjab. Dressed in military fatigues, the boy stood alongside his two-year-old sister, who mimicked the salute, seemingly unaware of the family's tragedy. Colonel Singh's wife, mother, and relatives were inconsolable as crowds gathered to honor the slain soldier. Singh and two others died during a joint operation with police in response to intelligence on terrorists. The 41-year-old commanding officer was awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry. The Karnataka government has advised against unnecessary travel to Kerala areas affected by the latest Nipah virus outbreak. The outbreak has caused two deaths so far from a dangerous Bangladesh variant of Nipah spreading from humans. Karnataka has intensified surveillance in border districts adjoining Kerala and at points of entry to the state. This includes increased monitoring in districts like Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Chamrajanagara and Mysore that border Kerala.
