Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima is unaccounted for as the military aircraft he was aboard failed to land as scheduled, prompting concerns and an urgent search operation. President Lazarus Chakwera ordered immediate efforts to locate the missing aircraft after all attempts to establish contact were unsuccessful. Chilima, aged 51, was accompanied by nine others on the flight which departed in the morning. The aircraft was expected to arrive at Mzuzu International Airport but never made it. Chakwera, altering his plans, canceled his trip to the Bahamas to oversee the rescue operation.
