The International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel's long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, as illegal and urged its end "as rapidly as possible." The advisory opinion, requested by the UN General Assembly, emphasizes that Israel's presence in the territories violates international law. ICJ presiding judge Nawaf Salam stated, "Israel must end the occupation as rapidly as possible." The ICJ held hearings in February with most countries advocating for an end to the 57-year occupation, highlighting its threat to Middle Eastern stability. The United States, however, stressed Israel's security needs. Israel did not participate in the oral hearings.
