The death toll from two powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan on Saturday has risen to over 2,400 people, with more than 2,000 injured, officials said. The 6.3 magnitude quakes struck 20 miles northwest of the city of Herat near the border with Iran. Over 1,300 houses were damaged or destroyed in the tremors, among the deadliest worldwide this year. Rescue teams were dispatched to the affected areas which are mountainous and difficult to access. Afghanistan's healthcare system relies heavily on foreign aid which has declined since the Taliban takeover. The historic minarets in Herat sustained some damage from the powerful quakes.
