Asif Merchant, a 46-year-old Pakistani national, has been charged by US authorities for allegedly planning to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Known also as Asif Raza Merchant, he was arrested on July 12, 2024, just before boarding a flight out of the country. The plot involved stealing documents, staging protests, and carrying out the assassination. Merchant had attempted to recruit undercover FBI agents for the plot. His connections to Iran and use of coded language for his plans have heightened security concerns for Trump and other US officials.
