Russia declared a federal-level emergency in Kursk on August 9 following a significant Ukrainian incursion. Ukrainian forces, reportedly involving around 1,000 troops and numerous armored vehicles, seized control of approximately 600 square kilometers and several settlements. The Russian Defense Ministry responded by deploying additional forces, including artillery and tanks. The incursion, the largest attack on Russian soil since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, has raised tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Russia needs to "feel the consequences" of its actions, while Ukrainian forces claimed control of strategic sites in Kursk.
