Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her first public statement since stepping down, suggested that the United States played a role in her resignation. Hasina claimed she could have stayed in power if she had surrendered Saint Martin Island and allowed U.S. influence over the Bay of Bengal. “They aimed to seize power over dead bodies, but I prevented that by resigning,” she stated. The political unrest in Bangladesh has resulted in over 560 deaths since mid-July. Hasina, now in India, urged the public not to be manipulated by radicals.
