The UK government has announced a multi-billion-pound compensation scheme for victims of the infected blood scandal, which claimed over 3,000 lives. More than 30,000 Britons contracted HIV or hepatitis from contaminated blood products in the 1970s and 1980s. The scheme offers lifetime financial support, including regular payments for victims and bereaved partners. Additional £10,000 payments will be made to those subjected to unethical research. Payments will begin this year for infected individuals and in 2025 for others affected. The move follows a damning report revealing a pervasive cover-up and concluding the scandal could largely have been avoided.
