The fen raft spider, the largest spider species in the UK, has seen a resurgence thanks to a ten-year conservation effort. Once nearly extinct, these spiders, which can grow as large as rats and are known to walk on water, are now reappearing in nature reserves along the River Yare in Norfolk. The RSPB led the project to restore their populations. Historically, fen raft spiders inhabited wetlands like marshes and bogs in the Yare Valley, but their numbers declined as these habitats vanished. Despite their size, fen raft spiders pose no threat to humans.
