Prince Hisahito Becomes Japan’s First Royal Male to Turn 18 in 39 Years

Prince Hisahito, son of Crown Prince Akishino, celebrated his 18th birthday, marking the first time a male member of Japan’s Imperial family has reached adulthood in 39 years. Hisahito, nephew of Emperor Naruhito and second in line to the throne, acknowledged the milestone amid Japan’s demographic challenges. He expressed a desire to grow through his experiences and cherish his remaining time in high school. His official Coming-of-Age Ceremony will be held in spring 2025 after his graduation. The current Imperial House Law restricts the throne to males and requires female members who marry commoners to leave the royal family.
