Harini Amarasuriya was sworn in as Sri Lanka's new prime minister on September 24, 2024, following the election of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Amarasuriya, the 16th prime minister and third woman to hold the office, succeeds Dinesh Gunawardena. A member of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, she is also the first female prime minister in nearly 25 years. Amarasuriya, a sociology academic and activist, holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. Her portfolios include Justice, Industries, Science and Technology, Health, and Investment, making her a key figure in Sri Lanka’s new government.
